Internet Zone Missing/merged with Restricted Sites Zone

Please advise how I can get the Internet Zone back under Tools, Internet
Options, Security Tab. There are only three Zones here and there should be
four. The Internet Zone shows with the Restricted Sites Zone Icon and there
isn't any Restricted Sites Zone listed anymore. I can't load most web pages
as they just flash on and on. You can't use any buttons like "Download" and
"Sign in".
Running Windows ME and Internet Explorer 6 SP1. Tried the "Repair" and the
"Revert Back" to Internet Explorer 5.5. Then downloaded and installed
ie6setup.exe to get back to Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and it is listed as
installed under the "Control Panel" "Add/Remove Programs". Have installed and
ran Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot - Search & Destroy. Norton Anti-Virus 2005
doesn't find any problems. Checked the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones and there are only three folders here and there should be
five. The three folders are 0, 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are missing. Any help you can
provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Hi Tex,

Something has happened to your Registry... You are missing an entry for the
security zone in

HKCU(HKLM)\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\3

Check your registry to see if you have this entry. Each of the security
zones has its own registry node -
0 - My Computer (Protected Mode)
1 - Local Intranet
2 - Trusted Sites
3 - Internet
4 - Restricted Sites

Check to see if the node has not been renamed to something else, otherwise

1. Do a restore (not sure how you do that with Windows ME) as you want to
rebuild your registry to recreate these entries... I don't think this is a
good option.... could wipe out all of your other software that you have
installed.

2. If you are confident in using the registry editor (Regedit), navigate to
the Restricted Sites node (4)... Use the Registry>Export Registry menu to
save a .reg file with the contents of the node... Open the resultant file
with notepad and change the Node name from 4 to 3 and save the file. Now
click on the file in File Manager to merge it back into your registry... to
create the Zone entry for the Internet Zone... You should have a full
understanding of what is happening here... If you don't get some local
help..
Now you will have to change some values - so that it appears as the Internet
Zone and not the Restricted Zone from where it was copied.
Description = "this zone contains all Web sites you haven't placed in other
zones"
DisplayName = "Internet"
Flags = 1
Icon = inetcpl.cpl#001313
LowIcon = inetcpl.cpl#005425

These values may be different to mine....

As always extreem caution is recommended when making changes to the
registry.
Regards.

Hi Rob;

Thanks for the reply. We are on the right track here. I need clarification
on the use of "Regedit". I agree that using the System Restore is NOT a good
option.

1. You stated: "navigate to the Restricted Sites node (4)...". Under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones there isn't a "Restricted Sites node (4)" There is only the
following:
0 - My Computer (Protected Mode)
1 - Local Intranet
2 - Trusted Sites
The nodes 3 and 4 are missing.
If I do a Find in the Regedit, I see that under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones there are all the nodes here:
0 - My Computer (Protected Mode)
1 - Local Intranet
2 - Trusted Sites
3 - Internet
4 - Restricted Sites
Question: Can one just copy the 3 and 4 nodes from the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones or is this a no no????

2. I am able to use the Registry, Export Registry menu to save a .reg file
with the contents of node 2, but I do NOT know how (procedure) to do the
"merge" to get the correct information into
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\3. Can you explain this procedure so that I can follow it?

3. When you say save a .reg file, what does the file name have to be?

4. You stated: "Open the resultant file with notepad and change the Node
name from 4 to 3 and save the file." I don't see anything in the contents of
Notepad where the changing of the Node Name can be done????

Please advise. Your assitance will be greatly appreciated......

Hi Rob;

While working on the computer the Windows Registry Tool came up and ran.
This fixed the Registry and now all is functioning properly. I now have all
nodes including the Internet Zone. Thanks for your assistance. Consider this
issue resolved....
