Internet Shortcuts broken

Hi all,

Please forgive this second post. I don't think I did a very good job of
explaining what is happening on my system the other night. I thought I'd
better explain the problem a bit differently.

I'm running Windows 2000 Professional 5.00.2195, Service Pack 4. Something
strange has happened with all of my Internet Shortcuts but first I want to
share what I think I know about Internet Shortcuts. An Internet Shortcut is
just
a type of plain text INI file with a .url extension hung on it. An actual
example:

I live in the Phoenix area and like to eat out. I use a Phoenix Restaurant
guide to help me pick restaurants. Their URL happens to be (and this is not
a plug for them) http://www.azmetro.com/phxmetro.html. I created an Internet
Shortcut on my desktop by right clicking in a clear area of my desktop,
selected <new> and then <shortcut>. I then either pasted or entered the URL
into the "Location of the item" window, clicked <next> and entered some sort
of meaningful name, like in this case, "Phoenix Restaurant Guide", and
clicked <finish>.

The actual file that was created by all of this was saved as "Phoenix
Restaurant Guide.url" in %USERPROFILE%\Desktop. On my system that turns out
to be D:\Documents and Settings\don\Desktop\Phoenix Restaurant Guide.url.

The actual contents of that file are:

[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.azmetro.com/phxmetro.html
Modified=60A7306749A2C3014D

Now I need to get back to the problem at hand. Usually the file extension,
".url", is never seen and clicking, or double-clicking, on the shortcut
fires up the default browser and takes you to the URL entered.

Usually but not any longer on my system. The actual file extension, ".url"
can now be seen on all of my Internet Shortcuts. Further, while "executing"
the shortcut still fires up my default browser, the browser now just
displays
the contents of my Internet Shortcuts rather than going to them. It's kinda'
like all my Internet Shortcuts have become text files than can be viewed,
and
I presume edited, by my browser but not gone to. All of my browsers seem to
work normally, otherwise.

Browser"S"? Yes, normally I run Mozilla Firebird (0.7+ at the moment) and
occasionally Opera v7.21. I also run MSIE 6.0.2800.1106IC when I really
have
no other choice. I guess I've become *VERY* addicted to Tabbed Browsing.

It appears to me that Windows no longer knows how to handle .url file types.

Anyone?

Sorry, I stopped reading after about the ninth paragraph. ;] Try opening a
command prompt (cmd.exe) and entering this:

regsvr32 /u urlmon.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Thanks but it didn't help. I even backed up a version and tried that one,
to no avail.

The "fix" was just too easy! Something messed with the default .url
settings (Opera???).

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types.
scroll down to the URL entry and click on the "Restore" button.
