Internet Gateway "self-creates" ???

My desktop is wired to the router and has been for a year or more with no
problems. "View Network Connections" has always shown just one icon for Local
Area Connection under the heading of LAN.

Yesterday my modem lost signal and I opened the Network Connections while
troubleshooting. To my surprise there is another icon labeled "Internet
Connection" under the heading of Internet Gateway and it shows that it is
connected. Clicking status shows that it is sending and receiving at 10 mbps.
Status for the LAN connection is also sending and receiving, but at 100 mbps.

I click disable on the Gateway icon and get no response. Delete is faded out
so I cannot use it and selecting the icon and clicking delete on the keyboard
has no effect.

The only other computers using the router are a desktop with a wireless
connection and occassionally my notebook, also wireless. All computers
connect directly to the router, so I do not / should not have an Internet
Gateway. (Right?)

Any ideas? Is this harmless or should I be concerned?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
