What's this "Internet Gateway"?

We have 2 units, one XP Home one XP Pro, operating on a LAN behind a Linksys
BEFSR81 Ethernet router. I recently flashed the router to the latest
firmware. For reasons unknown, both computers seem to have slowed down
internet connection speeds lately.

Today I was going to check on XPs firewall settings so I went to the
"Network Connections" area of the control panel. To my surprise I find that
I now have two groups of connections listed. I have always had the "LAN or
High Speed Internet" group of connections, which contain my onboard LAN
adapter and my 1394 adapter. But now I have a second group of connections
called "Internet Gateway". Under the Internet Gateway I show an "Internet
Connection". Right clicking the properties on the "Internet Connection"
brings up a single "General" tab with the following description: "This
connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection
on another computer." According to the status this connection is not
firewalled. When I try to delete the connection, I get an error message
that says that the connection is in use and cannot be deleted. Then I went
to the second computer which has XP Pro and found the same connection.
Neither computer uses Internet Connection Sharing - all connections are
through the router. Looking further, I checked my daughter's laptop and
found no "Internet Gateway".

So where does this "Internet Gateway" come from? Did we get some nefarious
worm that is setting up an unwanted unfirewalled connection? How do I
disable and delete this connection?

TIA,

Alex

Alex,
there is obviously an issue with Internet Connection Sharing that you do not
want enabled. What I suggest is that you go to Help and Support and enter
Using Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control into the Search field.
There you will find the answer to your issue.

Most likely, when you upgraded the router's firmware you enabled universal plug
and play (uPnP). The "Internet Gateway" connection appears when both the router
and the OS (WinXP sp2) have uPnP enabled. You can configure the router from
this control panel icon rather than using the router's web page configuration
utility. I suspect that your daughter's laptop either doesn't have XP or has
uPnP disabled.

To clarify my previous post, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821371/en-us,
which says:

"By default, the Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client is
installed, whereas UPnP is not. In this default configuration, an Internet
Connection icon appears in the Network Connections folder, and a Broadband
Router icon does not appear in the My Network Places folder"
