Internet Gateway icon

A couple of days ago I posted a message regarding
internet connection sharing and the installation of a
router. With help from the folks at dlink, my problem has
been resolved.

In a nutshell, as I'm sure everybody except me realized,
you can't use ICS and a router, as they 'fight' each
other.

My question to anyone with input, is this. In
the 'Network Connections' window I now have an icon
calling itself 'internet gateway'. I believe this icon
materialized when I inadvertantly ran the network setup
wizard. As long as I don't right click it and hit enable,
things are fine, but of course if I was to click enable,
the war would be on. Is this icon related to ICS only, or
does it have something to do with using a router? In the
event that it's not needed for a router based network, is
there some way of eliminating it, as a right click
results in the drop down box, but delete is greyed out.

Thanks adrian916 for your previous input, and thanks to
anyone who can offer input on the above.

Hugh.

Hello Hugh,

You can enable ICS only when two or more network adapters
are installed and enabled.

If your computer has multiple private connections that
connect to private LAN segments, you should bridge the
private connections before you enable ICS.

If you would like to correspond further, I have created a
temporary email address you can contact me at:

The Icon represents your router.

If the router is ... well routing ... then the status should be enabled.
But sometimes a firewall can mess up the status.

If you don't like the icon, uncheck "Internet Gateway Discovery and Control
Client" in optional components.

Ken, thanks for the input. I went into add/remove windows
components and unchecked that box, and presto that
bothersome little icon has vanished. All seems to be
working as advertised so far.

Regards, Hugh.
