Recently I got some malware on my laptop when surfing the net. I got rid it
by using ad aware, I think. Since then I have not been able to use internet
explorer,
all i get is a message saying 'internet explorer can not display this page'.
I can still send emails and update ad aware but i cannot update avira
antivirus
software. the security centre says that my firewall is stopping http port 80
and 443 and ftp port 21. please tell me how i can fix this problem.

Try this:

Malwarebytes© Corporationhttp://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

Do you mean that IE displays this message:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

If yes, and depending on which malware MBAM found, take a look in IE,
Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings.

Generally, there will be a check in Automatically detect settings and
Proxy server is unchecked. Some malware will tamper with these
settings and the MBAM can't tell if you changed them or malware
changed them so after removing any infections, it will just leave them
as it finds them.

When you get infected, the malware will usually just annoy you and
then do what it can to keep you from using methods to find and remove
it. Keeping you from getting on the Internet will prevent you from
using Google (or something else) to find a solution. It is all just a
game...
