Internet Connection Sharing Problem

I am trying to set up ICS on a home network.

My ICS host has a dial up connection to my ISP. ICS sharing is turned on.
the host connects to a D-link router used as a Wireless Access Point for my
client laptop.

I had to reset the Router IP address from 192.168.0.1 to ...0.254 to get the
host to turn on ICS since the host needs to be 192.168.0.1 to work (according
to the help files).

The network is running fine and I can access the client drives and printers
from the host and vice versa. I can ping the host from the client. The
Internet Gateway Icon shows in Network Connections on the client and says
'connected', but I cannot access the internet fom the Client - I get the
standard 'not found' message and the client then tries to connect on it's own.

I suspect there is something wrong with the Internet Gateway since when I
try to disable it nothing happens and it still shows 'connected'.

Any tips or assisatnce gratefully received.

Why would you use ICS if you have a router? Disable ICS, connect both
computers to the router.

The router will not connect directly to a dial up. It will only connect
directly to DSL or Cable, which is not available where I live. Hence I need
to use a dialup and thererfore must use ICS.

I realise the connection will be very slow on the clients, but I mainly want
it to allow the kids to use MSN Messenger when they are home,

Since you're using the router as an access point only, not a router,
make sure that the router's built-in DHCP server is turned off. The
client must get its TCP/IP configuration from the host's DHCP server.

An alternative is to configure the client's TCP/IP settings manually:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<254)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

Further to my first reply, it occurs to me that I will have to configure the
kids laptops when they arrive manually as well.

How do I tell my 'host' PC to assign IP addresses automatically to clients?

Just disable the router's built-in DHCP server. Then, the ICS host,
which has its own DHCP server, will automatically assign IP addresses
to the clients.

Thanks Steve, You've sorted it for me. Once I get the kid logged on I will
worry about the security.

In the meantime I will just keep an eye out for cards stopped out on the
road.
