Internet connection but no file sharing

Dear Colleagues,

I am having problems with the network and would
appreciate your advice please. I have to reset up
everything follwoing a catastrophic crash.

I connected and set up the network using the Wizard on
both machines (Laptop (LT) and PC. This has usually been
sufficient in the past). I found I could connect
to the internet from the LT via the PC, and vice-versa.
Excellent!

But I cannot share files: I cannot even detect the one PC
from the other using either explorer - or RUN with say
the PC name (eg \\Michael or \\Stephen, which has worked
in the past).

I have run the trouble shooter and got as far as the
ping: I can ping the LT (IP 192.168.0.188) from the PC,
but NOT the PC (IP 192.168.0.1) from the LT.

Now I am stuck since all the hardware seems to be OK,
there is a connection, but no recognition.

Any constructive help would be much appreciated please.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other firewall
programs while troubleshooting. When un-installing a firewall
program, use the un-install procedure provided by the manufacturer .
Don't use Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs, which might not
completely un-install it.

For more information, see:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Dear Steve,

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I have been through
what you suggested and still have the same problem
(internet sharing but no file sharing.

Below, in your text, I have set out the settings and what
I have changed.

However one thing I did not do was to de-install my
Norton Internet security because a. I have an old version
which requires a lot of updates - and also - when we were
re-installing the system a couple of days ago I picked up
a worm during the few minutes I was connected without it!!

If having looked at the settings you believe that it is
necessary, I could of course uninstall it and try again.

Otherwise have you further suggestions please?

With many thanks

Peter Borrell

One additional point which may or not be relevant:

On the PC, in the properties of the LAN connection
(Network Connections) the Internet Connection Firewall
box is greyed out and cannot be changed.

On the laptop, if can be altered.

Best wishes

Dear Steve,

The problem seems now to have partly resolved itself.

So now I can see the laptop from the PC but not vice-
versa. I can see the PC from the laptop but, although I
have checked the file sharing, access to the LT is always
denied.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

With many thanks for your time and trouble

I have a very similar situation. My PC (XP Pro) and laptop (XP Home)
are on a wireless network. Both computers can access the internet just
great but neither can see each other. Also, both computers can see and
access my husband's computer but he can only see (not access) my
laptop and PC. We've set permissions to allow everyone access.
Firewalls are off. ZoneAlarm is set for the correct IP range.

NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled. We get our IP addresses via DHCP.

Ran ipconfig /all and it did not show peer-to-peer as the Node Type.
Looked at the registry and neither NodeType or DhcpNodeType were
present.

My event viewer continues to show the NetBT event 4321 error as well
as the Browser 8009 error. So far, everything that I've seen suggested
is already set on both the laptop and PC. It seems to me that there is
a netBios problem but for the life of us we're not finding it. Any
suggestions?
