I've had a workgroup working for quite a while and sometimes I was unable to
connect to shared pcs completely or some shared folders.

I have everyone, wired and wireless, all on the same workgroup and obviously
can see all the shares but I get this error message:

\\xxxxx\(d) is not accessible. you might not have permission....

I've searched for days for a solution. Some shares work and some don't.

I'm using simple file sharing, DHCP on everything and

Under tcp/ip>properties>advanced>wins

I have tried both default netbios setting (get from DHCP server) and forced
Enable netbios

I've disabled all firewalls and am pulling my hair out. For example,
desktop #1 can see all the shares on my laptop and connect, but the LT
cannot connect to the desktop. Obviously something is wrong.

Any pc will respond to a ping with or without firewall.

I've tried removing all the shares and starting over, no joy.

I've read every thread, forum and KB possible and this is driving me nuts. I
need to store and move files reliably.

Is there a sure cure solution?

Hi
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

Jack,

Thanks for the thorough and fast response, I'll read up on all of them but
ironically, I solved my own problem.

My LT only has one share, the DT I was trying to connect to has about 5
shares.

I should have mentioned that (shame on me for not mentioning it) I was also
getting the second half of the error:

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

I wasn't getting any errors in LT's event log, so I assumed it was a
firewall/trust type of issue.

I then decided to check Event Viewer on the DT I was unable to connect to
and was getting the following error all over the place in the DT's Event
Viewer:

Event ID 2001
Description: The Server's configuration parameter "IRPStackSize" is too
small for the server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this
parameter.

A quick search on IRPStacksize, and I created a DWORD in the registry for
the non-existent Stacksize variable. I chose 25H as a starting value,
rebooted DT and I can get to everything now.

Added the variable here:
