It depends on what hardware they have at the house at the shore. If they
have a non-wireless router, just plug your laptop into one of the ports
using an ethernet cable. It should Just Work as long as your computer
is set to get IP/DNS automatically (it probably already is).

If they have a wireless router and you want to use your laptop
wirelessly, you'll need the router's encryption key. The owners should
provide that. Your laptop's wireless will see the shore house's
wireless network and allow you to connect when you enter the encryption
key.

If you want more focused help, tell us what hardware is at the shore
house.

Hello Malke,
The shore house hardware is verizon DSL through ethernet cable. That is all
that is there. They do not have any wireless router, therefore I thought that
plugging in the Ethernet cable is how I would have to access the internet.
Yet do I have to have an IP address from the owners of this shore house? This
IP/DNS that may automatically be set up on my laptop, is there anyway to
check? I have an HP pavilion which has an integrated wireless card (which
makes me think it is pretty up to date with hardware and software) it runs
home edition XP. I am not concerned with wireless at all just would like to
access the internet.
Thank you for your advice and any more that you can provide.

If the shore house has a router (wired, not wireless) all you would do
is plug an ethernet cable into your laptop and to one of the free ports
on the router. The router normally does DHCP and will give your
computer a private IP address and you'll be able to get on the Internet
without installing anything on your machine. To see whether your laptop
is set to get IP/DNS automatically on the ethernet adapter, go to
Network Connections where you should see entries for your network
adapters. Right-click on the ethernet adapter and choose Properties. In
the box that you'll get, double-click the TCP/IP entry and you'll see
whether it is set to automatic.

If the shore house doesn't have a router but their computer is connected
directly to the Verizon DSL modem, have the shore house owner (or you)
ask Verizon how that would be handled. DSL, unlike cable, requires a
username/password and naturally that would not be on your computer.
Verizon may also lock their modem to the MAC address of the network
adapter on the computer where their service was set up. I have no idea
and Verizon would be the ones to ask.

Malke,

Thank you again- I think that is exactly the way it is setup where they do
not have a router and the computer is usually directly connected to Verizon
DSL modem. I do believe there is a signon and password. I will ask them, last
year it was alot easier they had a laptop there for renters to use. However,
this year they do not and I remember that it has a signon and password, no
router at all.
Again, many thanks

Have fun at the shore. I'm jealous. ;-)
