Internet gone

I have XP Home and IE6. I took out the battery of my laptop at home to run
on mains power, and the internet connection was suddenly gone. It was OK
before that. Put the battery back in, but the internet connection does not
return. Right click on the icon in the systems tray to repair, but windows
is unable to repair.

Did the virus (Avast) checks all OK.
Did the anti-spyware checks (Ad-aware and others) all OK.
I do these two checks regularly at least once a week.

So I am posting from my PC at home and am able to, showing the home wireless
system is OK. Did the wireless system restart also. My daughter's laptop in
the other room is also ok and having the internet quite strong.

How can I fix the problem?

TIA

- Reboot the laptop.
- Make sure the physical switch (if there is one) is turned on for your
wireless.
- Change the power management settings for your wireless device (in Windows)
so that it does not power-off the device when on battery power to save
energy.

Thanks for your prompt response. Did the reboot (restart). Wireless switch
is on.
I am not that good on computers to understand your statement on power
management. But went to power management and this is what I saw::

Power Options Properties/Power Schemes/Minimal Power Management

When computer is: plugged in Running on
batteries

Turn off monitor: Never
Never
Turn off Hard Disk: Never
Never
System Standby: Never
Never

Apart from Minimal Power Management, other options for adjustments are:
Home/Office Desk/Laptop/Presentation/Always On/Max Battery

All I had wanted to do was to remove the battery to preserve it, and run on
mains power at home, and the problem happened.

Would appreciate your further advise on what to do next.
Thanks g

Go to My Computer>Control Panel>System

Choose the Hardware tab then Device Manager button.

Find the category called Network Adapters then click the + to exapnd it if
it is not expanded already.

If it IS expanded when you get to Device Manager, likely there will be a
yellow triangle with an exclamation point over your Network Adapter listing.

Either way, determine which is your Wireless adapter, right click on it and
select Uninstall.

Reboot your machine and allow Windows to reinstall the device and see if
that doesn't bring back your connectivity.

For future reference it's a good idea to not remove your battery while the
machine is running. Even if it is connected, if you are plugged into an AC
power source the battery will not be discharging so there is no need to
remove it.

Thanks for your response.
Did as you instructed:
after cmd command prompt box
ipconfig/release and Enter. I get the message "No operation can be performed
on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected." The ststement
is then repeated again on the next line.

Then to ipconfig/renew Enter. The same statement as above is repeated.

What shall I do next?

Thanks

Thanks for your response.

Did as you told. On Device Manager I have two network adaptors. But no
yellow triangle on any of them. Anyway, uninstalled my adaptor as you
instructed, and restarted. Did not cure the problem.

And then uninstalled the other adaptor and restarted with no good effect.

Went to internet diagnosis and it says Windows is not managing my system.
Media disconnected.
The log shows HTTP: Error 12007 connecting to www.microsoft.com, and other
12007 errors.

Hope this helps you to advise me further.

Thanks

That means the machine is not connected to your wireless system...
If your laptop has an Eithernet connector, hook it up direct to confirm
whether or not there are other problems
