Internal Hard Drives Thrashing Since Restore

Hey everyone

With the release of the xbox 360 I wanted to stream my hd content to same
from my pc which runs xp pro.
However, MS in their wisdom decided that only Media Centre owners could do
so, so I installed vmware with the intention of installing WMCE and emulating
it.
Prior to this my pc purred and was fast as get go [see system details at end
of post]

Anyway, I decided to build my own wmce pc or wait for future add ons from MS
for the xbox 360.
When I attempted to un-install VMWARE the uninstall failed and left it in
place but the uninstall routine missing from add/remove programs.
So i did a restore to an earlier date and since then i have had nothing but
trouble!

Previously whenever I opened a application no matter how large or how many
processes it took the result was it opened almost instantly.
However now when i open a application windows seems to stop and think about
it [hourglass] then thrash the drive and eventually open.
Task manager even suggests that the application has stopped working, it
hasn't but just seems to hang ages then eventually load.

I checked for virus's, malware etc straight away and was given a clean bill
of health.
I did notice that Zone Alarm had made a huge number of I/O hits just in
booting up the OS. In the region of 500,000!

Any help would be appreciated!
