Insufficient system resources exist to complete the required opera

Myself and other users regularly get the above message. More often than not,
this is when trying to copy or read a network resource. If I shut down some
applications (most of them!) then it will start working again. This is
getting quite frustrating. Any ideas?

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 with 1Gb RAM on a Lenovo Centrino Laptop (R61)

Is the network resource Server based or just a workgroup PC ? When
multiple users are accessing a shared resource there is a limitation on the
number of connections that can be made simultaneously.

The network resource is typically a mapped network drive or network share on
a Windows server (we have a mixture of 2000, 2003 and 2008)
However, this doesn't occur for everybody.

Appreciate the follow up. I'd probably use SysInternals Process
Explorer to monitor one of the PCs that exhibit the problem. You
can modify or add specific columns of stats you're interested in.

I tried that before posting the question here. I downloaded some of the
recommended hot fixes
etc but that doesn't seem to have helped.

Can't see anything obviously causing this issue. However, I do find that IE8
is often using a lot of memory, and once I end all instances of IEXPLORE
altogether, it starts working.
Wondering if Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 doesn't help either
