Hi,

I have a user running win xp pro who is getting the following error:

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service"

I have checked the event log, but can't find anything.

What could be the issue?

The issue is that there are insufficient system resources to complete
the requested service.

In addition, there are insufficient details in your post to proved a
more detailed response.

what additional details do you need?

The laptop is a standard winxp pro install, with all the updates applied,
has 2GB RAM, latest cpu, just brought it last year.

I've seen that message pop up on XP SP2 systems with 4GB RAM when they
try to hibernate. Apparently the original version of the hibernate
routine couldn't cope with that much memory.

Check this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095 They have a
downloadable fix there.

What PA Bear said.

To minimize the offering of guesses, more information is needed
(unless you like guesses).

From what I've seen it isn't the amount of memory so much as the
fragmentation of the memory blocks the system tries to gather up when
its told to hibernate. For instance you are more likely to run into the
problem the longer and more applications you have used since you rebooted.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tim and Bob! I've been struggling with this
error for many months. I thought I had searched for every permutation of the
error text on Bing, Google, and directly on www.microsoft.com, but I still
missed this KB article. Today, I installed the hotfix you referenced and it
appears to have taken care of the problem.

Formerly, every time I had attempted to put my WinXP SP2 laptop (with 4GB of
RAM) into hibernation mode, the atttempt failed with an "Insufficient system
resources exist to complete the API" popup. In addition, the Windows Systems
Log would report an Information event with an Event ID of 26 and the same
text in the Description.

Prior to installing this hotfix, I had *never* been able to put this laptop
into hibernation mode--and I had even tried it right after a cold boot and
prior to running any applications (other than logging in). Since installing
the hotfix, I've tried loading numerous applications concurrently and am
happy to report that I'm still able to put the laptop into hibernation mode!
Thanks, again!
