Insufficient Resources

Whenever I leave my latop on overnight, even if it is idle when I come to it
in the morning the system responds really slowly and whenever I try to do
anything (start a program, delete a file, or even open the start menu) I
recieve a message telling me the system has insufficient resources to carry
out the task. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might
be?

I have just discovered that the reason behind this is that some programs
that are opened in Windows do not exit themselves properly and, although
they appear to have close the task manager windows still detects them as
being open and occupying large amounts of memory. Is there any way I can
make sure programs close properly in the future?
