Does GAIM allow voice chat to Yahoo though? I've looked at it but
can't see that function. On the other hand it appears to be able to
provide voice chat with Google talk so this might be the way to go.

According to the Gaim page ... no. Wrong proggie for you, I guess :-(

Yes I am and it works well for IMs on the 4 networks

I have only made Voice calls to other Instan-t users and the voice was
very good.

Thanks - might give it a try. I saw mention of instan-t months ago here
and went to take a look. Didn't need it at the time but bookmarked it. I
seem to keep going back for another look so I think it's trying to tell
me something. I just wish there was a FAQ page, I just keep ending up at
a support page which is a shame.

Hmm, think I better try this again. I didn't really search it out more
b/c I was put off by last time.

Sorry about the typos - squashed my finger between a huge rock and some
concrete and it's throwing my brain out of whack with my fingers.

It's pretty straight forward. The Email signature tool is a nice touch
as well

If you're using dialup then getting the best voice communication app is

Would lots of "advertising" be a "good reason" ? It wouldn't be in my
opinion.
and last time I tried it I was impressed with the voice quality.

Last time a Skype user phoned me it sounded terrible.

What type of microphone one uses however can make quite a difference.

You know I don't think the home page link that Ed supplied takes you to
the exact same home page it did a day or two ago. I've not seen that
page before. Either that or I used my bookmark for the page I got from
this group ages ago.

Well typical of Trillian it won't connect to MSN despite my re creating
my connection many times over. Keeps saying I have the wrong password
but I have connected through Windows Messenger with the same password.
So off I went to the forum and guess what? Every second question is
about failure to connect to MSN and there are no solutions that I can
find. Try this, try that and everyone comes back saying it still doesn't
work.

Hmmph! Sure hope Total Uninstall does it's job well.

It updated MSN as soon as I ran it but I've just checked again and it
says there are no updates. I can log in with Windows messenger either
while Trillian is already open or after I close it.

I've now installed instan-t and it connects fine. It will get tested
this afternoon when I talk to my friend in America, hopefully.

Thanks for your help

Google talk is nice.
Small, simple with excellent voice.

I got fed up with yahoo's buulying & adverts and configuring microsoft
messenger for voice with my router is harder than it should be

Why not use Microsoft Netmeeting? It's already installed for Windows
users and it supports voice chat, among other things.

In any case, popular IMs such as MSN, Yahoo, and AIM all have web
interfaces that allow you to use their IM features online. However,
you need to set up an IM account before using them.

MSN Messenger web interface: http://www.e-messenger.net
(you'll need a Hotmail or MSN email account for this one)

AOL Instant Messenger web interface: http://www.aim.com

Yahoo Messenger web interface: http://messenger.yahoo.com
(you'll need a Yahoo email account)

I tried Miranda but found that it lacked some of the features of it's
full-strength IM counterparts.

Thanks for the info. What's the difference between Netmeeting and
Windows Messenger? I've just got it in for Windows Messenger b/c even
when I tell it to not sign me in automatically it still does every
second time I dialup. I dont' want everyone to know when I'm online as
most of the time I just want to go about dong what I like to do online
and not "chatting".
