better than Trillian IMHO:

http://www.miranda-im.org/

<SNIP>
Miranda IM is a multi protocol instant messenger client. Miranda IM
is designed to be resource efficient and easy to use. It uses very
little memory, requires no installation and can easily be carried
around on a single floppy disc.
<SNIP>

i like that last sentence; meaning you don't have to install it. you
can run it from a floppy (like nPOP); works with MSN, ICQ, AIM, IRC,
etc. but not YET with Yahoo.

Opinions ?

I use it. I'm still waiting for it to support the updated protocol on the
AIM network though.

Each program has its advantages. I used Miranda IM for a while, and I like
the customization features, but it has an incomplete feel to me (which is
understandable considering that the latest version is 0.3). Trillian isn't
perfect, but it's the best I've tried, IMO. Plus, it has many more skins.

Each program has its advantages.

True

I used Trillian for ages. I started getting the MSN popup
telling me to upgrade all the time a little while back and I
heard about the possible problem with MSN. I found a 'fix' for
it - a new msn.dll file so I installed that and ran trillian, the
program crashed on startup (illegal op), even when I put the
original msn.dll file back it didn't work :(

So I thought I would look elsewhere, I used Miranda-IM, back when
it was Miranda-ICQ, up until I got trillian so when I found out
it does more than just ICQ now I was excited, it's not bad but
still fell short of my expectations... Though some of the user
made icons look pretty funky :)

Then I found another IM program which many people may not have
heard of:

Easy Messenger:

http://www.easymessage.net/

I'm using it now and personally I like it more than Miranda, it's
a personal preference thing though, but definately worth a look.

i like 'em both. miranda is nice because you can really customize it.
prob i got with easy message is that it doesn't show my msn contacts.

I've checked out Easy Message (just downloaded it) and my first impression
is that it's sufficient, but lacks needed customization (e.g., the ugly
default list font). But that's just first impression.
