Instant Messaging - which one?

Hi all,
I have a friend in the US of A (I'm in Australia) who I talk, voice, to
via Yahoo messenger once a week. I've just formatted my pc and am
annoyed that the only way to get Yahoo is to have it automatically
install. I'm on dialup and don't want to waste time downloading it yet
again and then not being able to save the download.

I've been looking at Instant-T and Miranda instead
Instant-T http://www.interactiveni.com/IMSite/imfreeware.htm
Miranda http://www.miranda-im.org/

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? I'm also trying not to
clutter up my "clean" new pc by installing everything and trying them
out. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info/reviews out there about
Instant-T. I also have a teenage niece who likes to send me the
occasional IM through MSN.

Thanks
miskairal

Thanks. I was just looking at that. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to get
others to install it too.

Google Talk is the one I use primarily and, at least for those who I find
it important I have communication with, I haven't had too much trouble
getting them to install it.

But it is worth mentioning, in case you need a solution that allows you to
communicate with other protocols as well (Yahoo,MSN,etc.), GAIM is a free
option that connects to everything (including gTalk) -- it's a
multi-platform, open source application. I'd probably recommend it over
Miranda. I used to use Miranda, enjoyed it for it's
plugins/tweakability--but when push comes to shove, GAIM has a tendency to
be a little more user friendly and functional out-of-the-box.

I give a hearty second to Gaim. I have friends who use just about every
type of account and having Gaom means I do not have to load them all up
to chat :)

Great proggie.

Where can I find this program?

I'd definitely recommend Miranda way over Trillian or GAIM. I love
and appreciate its stability, its modular structure, and the fact I
can start up invisible and not be hammered with IMs (which you can't
really do with GAIM but not sure w/ Trillian).

Does GAIM allow voice chat to Yahoo though? I've looked at it but can't
see that function. On the other hand it appears to be able to provide
voice chat with Google talk so this might be the way to go.

Again, to whom can I actually talk with Miranda? I can't see any mention
of being able to connect with voice.

I tried yesterday but on my dialup it was just too slow. I never have
problems with voice chat but I cannot open web pages or allow email to
download at the same time. Thanks for the link though.

If you're using dialup then getting the best voice communication app is
of paramount importance. My impression is that Skype is probably the
best. All I can say is that it must be a very popular voice app for a
good reason and last time I tried it I was impressed with the voice
quality. If you're mainly talking to your friend in the US then perhaps
you can ask them to download skype too. It seems a minor request to
make if you're going to be using it regularly.

As for other purposes, such as instant messaging, you can perhaps use
another client that excels at that. There's nothing wrong with using
two clients if it gives you what you need, and you needn't search
endlessly for the only one the would cover all your needs. If you want
a small application for instant PC text messaging then miranda is quite
small and efficient. You probably won't notice that it's switched on.

Gaim is more resource hungry but I personally find it easier or more
pleasant to use than miranda, though that's just a personal preference.
It has a tendency to freeze on my machine so I use trillian instead.
