The Miranda Instant Messenger project is happy to announce a new public
release of Miranda IM. Miranda IM is a free multi protocol instant
messenger client for Windows designed to be resource efficient and
customisable. It uses very little memory, requires no installation and
runs fast even on very old computers. Its powerful plugin system makes
Miranda IM extremely flexible. Only the most basic features are built
in, but there are currently almost 200 free plugins available for
download that allows users to extend the functionality in Miranda IM.
Miranda IM is open source and published under the terms of the GNU
General Public License. OS support: Windows NT4, 95, 98, Me, 2000 & XP.
Protocol support: Support for ICQ, AIM, MSN, IRC and Jabber is included
in this release. The following protocols are available as separate
downloads on the website: Gadu-Gadu, ICQ Groupware, Yahoo, Netsend,
EmLanProto, Vypress Chat, POP3, Tlen and more! Official Website:

I think MirandaIM is better than Trillian, with a couple of caveats:

1.) MirandaIM uses TOC to communicate over AIM, which prevents
features like image connections, file transfers, ability to only allow
people on your buddy list to IM you, etc. Trillian, on the other hand,
uses Oscar, and thus has the more advanced features.

2.) If you use multiple accounts on one network (for example, if you
use two AIM SNs at the same time) you'll need to go into your plugin
folder for Miranda and make a copy of the plugin for AIM to log in to
both of them under Miranda at the same time.

Other than that, though, Miranda is great; very light-weight, very
powerful, and very customizable through a lot of plugins which you can
download for it.

That's strange, I thought Miranda IM uses Oscar protocol for ICQ, so why
not for AIM too?

It does use Oscar for ICQ, but apparently there are enough differences
between ICQ over Oscar and AIM over Oscar that you can't just use the
same plugin. *shrugs*
