installing XP on new computer

Steve Fass

Hope you can help me. I have a new computer, but it came
without an operating system installed so I got a new $90
version of XP. The first part of the Windows installation
worked fine: HD formated, partition created, files loaded,
and it re-boots. But rather than re-boot from the HD, it
is requiring the CD. The message is, "disk boot failure-
insert system disk and press enter." If I leave in the CD,
it goes back to the format and partitiion step. I can't
get it to go to the next step of the installation. Please -
what should I do? Thank you

I may be way off the mark here but have u tried looking
in the BIOS to see in which order the boot sequence is
running. It maybe set to look for disk as first boot
option instead of the HD.

Neil,
Thanks for responding. I had looked at the boot sequence,
and tried making C as the first one, but that didn't have
any impact. Thanks anyway. Anyone else?? Please??

You have the upgrade version and to use it, you will need to have a
qualifying version of Windows to show as a qualifier during setup. If you
don't have a Windows95/98/98SE/Me CD that is not currently installed on
another computer, you will need the full version of XP. Link below explains
the steps.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

.
Thanks for replying Michael. When I bought it, there was
no mention of it being an upgrade version, nor does it say
so on the package. The only caveat was that it can only
be sold with a hardware purchase. However, I will contact
the store I got it from to double check. Thanks aain.

It sounds like there is a problem of some sort with the hard drive or
with the BIOS configuration settings for the hard drive.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic software and run it to check out the new hard drive.
Depending on the brand of the hard drive, the diagnostic software may
create a bootable disk or you may need to use a seperate bootable disk
and then insert the disk with the diagnostic program.

Good luck
