Installing solitaire game capability

G

Greg

Somehow while I was deleting unwanted programs from my hard drive, I
inadvertently deleted my whole Games program from my computer, and I was
unable to re-install it, since I have no idea what happened to it. I click
Programs on my startup menu, but when I click Games, it says "Empty". I
don't have any idea how to reinstate it, but I desperately need Solitaire to
come back. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg

Greg, you probably deleted just the shortcuts to the games. You can
find most games in C:\Windows\System32 folder. Scroll down to Sol.exe,
rt click and select Send to Desktop
as shortcut.

What you see in Programs on your start menu are *not* programs, they
are shortcuts to programs. So, two points:

1. To get the shortcuts you want back, find the .exe files for them
(for example the one for Solitaire is sol.exe), and one at a time
right-click on them, choose create shortcut, then drag the shortcut to
the folder ...Start Menu\Programs\Games

2.If you deleted your unwanted programs from the Start Menu | Programs
folder, the programs you think you deleted have *not* been deleted;
just the shortcuts to them have been deleted. Moreover, you should
never delete a program, you should uninstall it. To do so, go to
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall them there.

What's more, if it's something that normally came as part of Windows
(or can do), you use the "Add/Remove Windows Components" rather than the
"Change or Remove Programs". In this case, highlight "Accessories and
Utilities" and click Details; then highlight Games and click Details
again. Make sure that whichever games you want are ticked, then OK your
way out of there.

If you have just deleted the shortcuts, this might still be an easier
route - go through it with the desired games _un_ticked, then repeat
with them ticked, and I think it will put the shortcuts back too. Beware
though - it might ask for a Windows CD, so don't go through the
unticking step if you haven't got one.

I didn't get the documentation for the manuals.

Sorry, I've only got Reuven's two identical posts of the above. However,
assuming it is a genuine problem/question:

In the short term, search for sol.exe; if you still have that (probably
in C:\Windows IIRR), that is solitaire (UK: patience) and you can jsut
run it.

Sounds like you may have uninstalled the Games part of Windows (which is
several actual programmes). Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel;
in Windows 9x, select the second tab, or in XP, select the Add/Remove
Windows Components button, select Accessories and Utilities from the
list that (eventually) appears, click Details, and ensure Games is
ticked (US: check that Games is checked).
