Installing SECOND DVD

B

bently

Using win XP home, sp2. 1 GIG memory. Motherboard... MSI KM2M ,
KM266-8235-6A6LVM4DC-00

Currently have 80 gig wd hdd as primary, and 40 gig hdd as slave on one
ribbon.

Have NEC DVD+RW nd-1000 on another ribbon.

Have new SONY DVD/CD, DVD+/-R dual layer, double layer to install.

Should I slave one of the DVD to another? (which would be slave)?

Or should I make each HDD as primary and make each DVD as slave to the HDD?

Thanks,

bently

It is never recommended to connect any other type of drive onto the same IDE
cable of the hard drives.

One possible config:

Make old NEC DVD+RW slave to Sony DVD+/-R DL master.

Mike Hall \(MS-MVP\)

Install the new drive as a slave to the existing optical drive.. cabling is
much easier.. check that the jumper is set correctly before installing the
drive into the case..

Each hard disk as a Master of each IDE channel and each DVD drive as a Slave of each IDE
channel.

Hello,
Personally my advise would be:
Sony (Dual layer) on Secondary Master & NEC on Sec. Slave.
Regards!

As you have discovered, you're going to get a number of responses
recommending this or that configuration of your devices. Based upon my own
experience and tests the computer facility I was associated with conducted a
few years ago on this very issue -- in virtually every case, aside from
connecting your working HD as Primary Master, it really didn't matter
performance-wise how the remaining drives (hard drives & optical drives)
were connected on the IDE channels.

Note I said "virtually every case". There were some rather rare situations
where it did matter with respect to HD connections/configurations. This
usually involved the encoding/decoding of extremely large video files
(gigabytes in size).

But do this. Experiment for yourself. In this instance don't rely on my
advice or anyone else's. Try different configurations of your devices and
run speed tests based on your normal day-to-day activities with the
computer, i.e., accessing programs, moving/copying files, burning CDs, etc.
See if there's any performance difference depending upon how this or that
device is connected and thus determine the best setup for your particular
needs.

My thanks to all,

I currently have the 40 gig HDD as slave to 80 gig HDD. So I think I
will leave that and then SLAVE the NEC to the Sony dual layer.

Should there be a problem I can always change it.

Thanks again, appreciate the advice.
