DVD writer won't go beyond 2GB

Dave Spencer

Sorry if this is an FAQ. I've Googled extensively for it and asked a lot
of people without success. Here goes:

I bought a new hard disk for my computer, which hitherto had been
writing DVDs happily. Installed XP Pro, SP2 and everything else and it
all worked well except the DVD writer.

The DVD writer refuses to write reliably beyond 2GB, and sometimes not
that far. Speed starts to dip around 2GB (sometimes earlier) and
DvdInfoPro shows up more and more read errors before eventually grinding
to a halt.

Other facts and figures - system disk is 80GB, two more 120GB HDDs.
Currently configured with the writer as secondary slave but it makes no
difference what it is. HDDs are all NTFS. The writer is an IDE1008 with
the latest firmware version. Software I'm trying to write with is Adobe
Premiere Pro V7.0, alternatively Nero 6.6.0.14, or NeroVision Express
3.1.0.11. Disks are DVD-R 8x. System memory is 512MB and the processor
is a P4, with Platinix main board.

I've tried some of the more obvious checks. The writer has been tested
and works OK on two other computers (one mine, one the supplier's). I
borrowed another writer (different make) and tried that on my machine -
same problem. I returned my computer to its original configuration of
primary master 120GB HDD, primary slave 120GB HDD, secondary master
DVD-RW. Still the same problem. Other than changing the jumper when
required, nothing's happened to the DVD writer.

I've wasted many hours on this over the last few weeks, and as one who
doesn't know much about the innards of BIOSes or XP I've run right out
of ideas.

Can anybody help? Eternal gratitude is guaranteed for a successful
solution, and please don't assume I've got even the most elementary
things set up right :)

TIA

Hi,
As you probably know, WinXP has no ability to write DVDs.
You have some 3rd party software that does this.
Try to fix it (reinstall, apply latest updates, call their support).

For example, Sonic Record Now had this symptom in some old version, and had
it fixed.

If you haven't already done this, you didn't mention though..... ;0)
Check your ASPI layers......If you have Nero go to the
Start/Programs/Nero Toolkit "Nero Info Tool" let it scan & click the tab
for ASPI.................Check System ASPI.

It's a start............

It says ASPI is installed and working correctly. V4.60. Interesting you
mention it though, because one thing I did have a lot of trouble getting
to work with the new system disk was my Canon neg scanner, and that
involved the ASPI layers...

Are there 4 layers or just the one??

http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/aspi.htm

WINASPI.DLL
WOWPOST.EXE
WNASPI32.DLL
ASPI32.SYS

You mentioned IDE 1008 as your burner, is it 1108 and was a typo?

Thanks for taking an interest in this! In answer to your points:

Four - in the system ASPI. One in the Nero one (WINASPI32.DLL). I'll
need to go through that URL in detail - clearly it's a complicated
subject. The latest version I have is 4.71 but in any case I am actually
using 4.60. I'll see what's on the other machine, the one that works!

Although I'm not godo at tpying, it really is IDE1008 :) Not sure who
the manufacturer is.

I have an IDE 1108.....Freebie that came with buying a 100pk of DVDR's
at Bestbuy.....Bought 200 & 2 free burners, couldn't pass it up, both
work superb.........The manufacturer of mine are Dynex....I asked
because you mentioned a firmware update earlier and was wondering if
they are the same and where ya got it........

Maybe it doesn't like the media types you're using....TDK....etc. I use
Fujifilms and not a prob yet........See if you can find the manuf name
as I believe I may have seen an issue you are describing but have to
narrow my search.........
