Installing print driver for networked printer

F

FD Terry

I am trying to install a Brother MFC-9600 printer on a
home network. While the remote computer (running XP)
can "see" the printer, it does not automatically find and
load a print driver. The selections provided manually do
not include this printer and Brother does not provide an
XP driver for it. If I connect the remote computer
directly to the printer, it locates and installs the
correct driver fine, so I assume it is available
somewhere in my computer, but I can't find it. Would
appreciate any help.

One option may be:

1. Install the printer locally on the XP computer as you described in your
last sentence.
2. Disconnect the printer, but do not "delete" the "Printer". Reconnect the
printer to the other computer.
Then, on the XP computer:
3. Open Printers and Faxes
4. click File, Server Properties
5. select the Ports tab
6. click Add Port
7. accept the default of "Local Port", click New Port...
8. key the UNC name of the printer (e.g.
\\othercomputername\printerSharename); click OK
9. close the Print Server Properties page
10. right click on the printer installed at step 1
11. select the "Ports" tab
12. click on the check box beside the port added in step 8 to assign it to
this printer (you should now see a check mark beside this port and the
printer name on that line under the "Printer" column.
13. click OK
