Installing Microsoft updates

Just reinstalled XP Home and chipset successfully.

Then I backed-up my registry.

After downloading all the updates from Microsoft, most of which were
security updates and installing them, I found that I had lost Audio.

I reinstalled my registry backup and my audio was back.

This has also happened to a friend. Has this happened to anyone else and
does anyone know which update is causing the audio to fail?

Most likely you installed one of the many Microsoft Driver updates
(Audio driver in your case) which are known to be a source/cause
of many problems.

Just install security updates using the custom update option and
ignore/uncheck any hardware driver updates.
