Installing IE6 over IE5 - Problem

G

Guest

My W2K has IE5 included with it. When I try to install IE6 with SP1 I get a
mixed version in which the logo on the About screen is still Microsoft
Internet
Explorer 5, but with Version: 6.0.2800.1106. Something is wrong. The
Microsoft AntiSpyware will not load because it says I do not have IE6
installed.
My other computer, also W2K, is able to install IE6 without a problem and
the About logo changes to Microsoft Internet Explorer (the 5 is gone).
Any ideas?

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.

I followed the instructions and changed the Registry value to zero. I then
re-installed IE6 but the result is the same: a mixed version of IE5 and IE6.
The Add/Remove Programs says that IE6 is installed but the About screen still
proclaims Internet Explorer 5, version 6.0.

Please ignore the info I just posted. It came from my "good" computer that
has IE6 correctly installed. As soon as my "problem" computer comes back up I
will post the correct info.

I am hand copying the info from the "problem" machine.

Browser Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 5.01
Browser & OS: (Major & Minor Version Information)
4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)
;SP1;

Screen Resolution: 800x600
Color Depth: undefined
Java Enabled: true

Since I changed the registry and re-installed IE6, I have lost mshta.exe and
the Add/Remove Programs program will not run.

I've tried several times to install it but even after just installing a fresh
copy of W2K I still cannot get IE6 to install. I have not removed it before.

Are you fully up-to-date at Windows Update? Have you been installing IE6
SP1 via Windows Update?

Did you format before "installing a fresh copy of W2K"?

IE Help > About > What version is listed here, please (e.g.,
5.01.1234.5678XX; include any letters at the end)?

I am running W2K with SP4.
No, I do not use Windows Update.
I did not install IE6 with Windows Update. I do not use Windows Update.
I ran the "ie6setup.exe".
Yes. I did format before installing W2K.
IE < About < has this version: 6.0.2800.1106

...I do not run any anti-virus on that machine.

1a. Get and install one. Configure it to seek and install updates
automatically, daily, at a time when the machine is normally running and
connected to the net. Configure it to run a full system scan a few minutes
after seeking updates, also daily.

1b. Scan the machine per this post:
http://aumha.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5878

Assuming no viruses/Trojans are found (or any found were successfully
removed)...

2a. If IE6 is uninstallable via Add/Remove Programs, do so and reboot.

2b. Delete any IE6Setup.exe files found on your machine.

3a. Go to Windows Update to install IE6 SP1 and reboot.

3b. Return to Windows Update to install other critical, post-SP1 updates and
reboot.

Since I changed the registry and re-installed IE6, I have lost mshta.exe and
the Add/Remove Programs program will not run.

That appears to be a clue of something requiring repair: <eg>

<title>KB285195 - Mshta.exe Error Message Appears When You Start the Add/Remove Programs Tool in Control Panel</title>

<title>KB265829 - Add\Remove Programs Tool May Not Work After Installing Internet Explorer 5.5 or Internet Explorer 6 on Windows
2000</title>

<title>KB329862 - Cannot Open Add/Remove Programs in Windows 2000</title>

BTW in case the only reason that module is starting is because
you tried to use Control Panel be aware that you can do most
things in CP separately. For example, Add/Remove Programs
can be started by Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

control appwiz.cpl

If you can't even do that but your ultimate goal is to get at IE6 in there:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Note that the entrypoint name is case sensitive.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if that module is one of the ones
which is incompletely updated. E.g. if you only have an older version
setupwbv.dll it would not have the entrypoint for IE6.

BTW as this now looks to be more of a problem with your OS than
with IE you may find better assistance and more common experience
in a win2000 newsgroup.

Good luck
