IE5-IE6

Last year sometime, I d/l'd the ie6setup.exe file and then
d/l'd and setup IE6. I didn't check at the time, but now
when I look at Help-About, the popup says that
it's "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5" in huge letters, and
below that is "Version 6.0.2800.1106". So what do I have -
IE6 or IE5? And why does the splash screen show both?

v6.0.2800.1106 indicates IE6-SP1. What Windows version?

IIWY I'd uninstall IE6-SP1
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q293907), returning
to your previous version ("Windows configuration"), and then reboot.

Now go to Windows Update (instead of a download page) and once again install
IE6-SP1. Reboot and return to Windows Update for additional patches
(important!). To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should
be disabled and all other running processes closed before going to Windows
Update and when downloading/installing from any MS page. (This is prolly
where you went amiss in the first place.)
