Installing apps fail with MSAS running

FWIW, I've done a good many software installs since this beta began, on
about 3 dozen machines, and I've never shut down Microsoft Antispyware on
any of them.

I don't doubt your evidence, though--so it seems to me that the issue is
either an interaction of your particular system and Microsoft Antispyware,
or, perhaps, the individual install.

I don't have great ideas about how to deal with it. Uninstalling, wiping
the installation folder, and then reinstalling would be worth trying, and if
the behavior persists, and is sufficiently annoying, I'd go for re-testing
at the next beta drop.

Yes, I know it's Beta. Did you read my post? I was
reporting an observation to MS BECAUSE it's Beta - that
is what you do with Beta testing. You look for problems
and report them to the publisher.

Yes--that was the right thing to do, and this is the right place to do it.
Thanks for the report. Microsoft reads these groups and the feedback here
is used in improving the product. That said, these are primarily peer to
peer groups, and there's little interaction with Microsoft staff.

Thanks Bill - Here is a little more info I was able to
install MS Office 2003, Visio Professional, Visual Studio
(6.x Enterprise and Dot Net Enterprise), and MS Project
with no problems. However, almost every game required a
shut down of MSAS Beta1 (there was no problem after the
install - re-enabling MSAS had no impact on playing the
games after install).

If you want, I can compile a list of the games that had
install issues later this week or maybe this weekend. Or
I can just wait for Beta2 and see what happens there.

Thanks,
-Kerry-

I would recommend waiting. There's a known bug with certain installer
versions. I don't know the specifics of the bug, but I've seen it in action
(with a game) and expect it to be fixed--so retesting on the next code drop
would be the most efficient thing to do I believe.

We've the same issue with MSAS on 2000, XP (w/o SPs, with
SP2) and on Win2003 (w/o SPs)
Most of installations are done in Install Shield
Professional (seems to be some version like 5 or 6).
For example, the installations that freezes, when MSAS
was active, but immediately go fine, when it was disabled:
1. Microsoft MS SQL Server 7.0
2. Microsoft MS SQL Server 2000
3. Adobe Photoshop 7.0
4. Adobe FrameMaker 7.0.1

Thanks

Thanks--hadn't seen this issue connected with Microsoft installs before.

In the bug I've seen, you could start the install with Microsoft Antispyware
active, and the install would then hang. right-clicking the Microsoft
Antispyware icon in the notification area, and shutting it down immediately
resumed progress on the install and it completed properly.

Exactly. Sorry for not explaining that so good.

No--you did just fine--I was just looking for some confirmation that we are
talking about (probably) the same bug. This one should be being fixed.
