Got the thing all hooked up and it seems to be working. But if I open My
Computer I see it captioned as "DVD-R" as opposed to my cd burner is shown as
"CD-RW". When I right-click either to show properties it gives me the option
to enable recording, but if I do it to one it cancels the other. Is this
normal?

Yes, you can only have one drive enabled for recording when using XP's
recording wizard, also XP cannot write to DVD's you will need a third party
writing software for that perhaps one came with the burner when you bought it?
When using a third party program it doesn't matter what drive is checked for
recording it will record to whatever drive you select it to, that recording
checkbox is only for XP's burning program
If you need/want a burning program try this one, free for two weeks.
