Installed new hard drive...not recognized

Thanks for all your input...it is much appreciated. I finally got
windows loaded after I changed to a ps2 keyboard and mouse. That
would never have occurred to me. I had to go borrow one because I
gave my old keyboard and mouse away. Anyway it's done...now I have
to do a lot of Windows updates. That will take me days I'm afraid.

|I recently connected a Western Digital 320G SATA hard drive in a
Vantec
| external enclosure to my computer. I first hooked it up via a
USB port.
| It was not recognized initially. The directions that came with
the drive
| described a procedure for formatting the drive which I did. After
| formatting in NTFS it was recognized. I subsequently connected
via the
| furnished eSATA cable and all has been working fine.
|
| Here's the procedure for formatting:
|
| Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management >
Storage > Disk
| management . IF (as was my case) the new disk appears, click on
"format"
| and select NTFS. Worked for me.

=====================================================================
| | I installed a new Seagate Barracuda 500 gb Sata internal hard
drive
| on my daughter's computer to replace a bad Seagate Barracuda
7200.7
| Sata 120 gb hard drive. The computer is a Dell XPS Generation 2
| desktop about 5 years old with XP. I downloaded drivers from Dell
| site and put them on a floppy. I have all the original cd's to
| reload Windows but when I try to load Windows XP sp1 from the cd
it
| appears to be doing just what it should until it gets to 'Welcome
to
| Setup" with options: To set up Windows XP now press ENTER
| To
| repair.....pressR
| To quit
| setup press F3
| None of these options work...the only option I have is to restart
| the computer.
| What am I missing here? I have replaced hard drives before but
| never had any problems. Please I need help. I don't really know
| what other information you need so just let me know.

Do yourself a favor and install SP3 and *then* install the updates.

Do yourself a bigger favor by starting a new thread to ask for guidance
since there are a number of precautions you should take first.

Anna,
Let me assure you that it is very likely that setting the jumper can make
all the difference having recently built 2 socket 478 systems using circa
2003/2004 motherboards and also repairing an old dell for a friend that
some systems just will not accept a SATA-II drive. The drive(s) either
needs to be jumpered to be SATA-I compatible or must be a SATA-I drive. I
also found out that a fourth
(6 year old) PC although it did not list SATA-II support in the manual or
at any OC site reviews did work at SATA-II speeds but only with the latest
and last drivers available installed for the motherboard, in this
particular instance research showed that the Intel chipset would support
SATA-II.

JS:
I understand that there are situations that require a SATA-II HDD (3.0 Gb/s
interface) to be jumpered to SATA-I (1.5 Gb/s) in order to effect device
recognition. Like you, I've run into that issue a number of times with older
machines.

But the OP was (is) working with a Dell Dimension XPS machine whose
motherboard contains the Intel 875P chipset. While it is true that the
motherboard supporting that chipset was designed for SATA-I HDDs, I've never
known a SATA-II HDD that was not backwards compatible with that board, i.e.,
in my experience there was no need for jumpering the disk for SATA-I device
recognition. Admittedly, I haven't had a great deal of experience with that
particular Dell machine equipped with that MB so I suppose it is possible it
might be necessary.

In any event, I take it you've seen the OP's latest post in which she
indicates the problem had to do with a keyboard/mouse issue.

Now I see the latest post, I guess the mouse is faster than SATA-II ;-)
Oh well back to my Gigabyte's "boot loop" problem.

Thanks for reporting what resolved the problem. I have had the same
problem in the past.

Yeah I thought about that but I didn't know if I had to do sp2 first
or not. I have a cd with sp3 on it that I bought from Microsoft to
install it on my own computer. Will that work on someone else's
computer like my daughter's?

The sp3 install CD will work on any computer as long as SP1a is
installed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389/)

Beg or borrow an SP2 or SP3 update CD from a friend rather than use a
complete Windows XP CD. These CDs are obtainable from Microsoft for
Postage and Packaging if you cannot find a friend with one. Lots of SP2
update CDs were issued free in August 2004. I still have mine. SP3 CDs
may not be so easily obtainable from a friend unless you live in a
non-Broadband area.

Hope this helps.
