Install Freezes On Splash Screen`

Hi

I have been trying to install Windows XP Professional on my PC but it
freezes on the splash screen. I have tried it with a different hard
drive with the same result, ran Memtest86 which showed no errors and
the installation disc works fine on other PC's. The PC worked fine
until I tried to reinstall the operating system.

Can anyone please suggest any other procedures I can take to rectify
this problem?

Have you partitioned and formatted the hard drive before using the
Install Disk?

Out of curiosity, why did you try to reinstall the OS in the first
place?

1. Turn on your PC and goto BIOS CMOS Setup by pressing DEL or F2 [or the key
required by your BIOS manufacturer].
2. Load the BIOS default settings.
3. Set the first boot device to CD-ROM.
4. Also check the CPU temperature if your BIOS have Hardware Monitor option.
It shouldn't be more than 55º. In India, its summer time and in one month I
see this problem in 3 PCs where installation was hanging due to high CPU
temprature. Yesterday, I recorded the highest temprature of a CPU which was
115º. It was due to loose Heat Sinker and dust.

Hope this help, Let us know.

Sounds like you haven't installed it yet. If this is so, ask yourself if
this is something you really want to do. As you stated in another post,
your only reason for reinstalling the OS was too much clutter. It would
probably be much easier and quicker just to address the clutter.

What OS do you currently have on this PC? And out of curiosity, do you
have a license to run XP Pro on it.

In the event you do decide to reinstall, I recommend you see this page:

Clean Install Windows XP
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Note that if a splash screen comes up, you need to press the Esc key.

224 MB RAM (probably 256 -- I assume the remainder if for onboard video)
is *just* enough to run XP if you're careful to watch memory usage. But
512 MB is really a much better amount to have. If your current OS is
Windows 2000 or older, you may be better off leaving it at that for that
reason alone (unless you want to purchase more RAM).

I did have Windows XP on this machine but it is half way through
installing so the hard drive is now formatted.
Yes I have a licence to run XP Pro on the machine.
Do you have any ideas as to what I can do to sort this?

It's possible you're doing it incorrectly.

It's possible when the splash screen came up, you neglected to press the
Esc key. Again, using this guide:

"Clean Install Windows XP"
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

.... follow it to the letter. If you hit a snag, indicate which step it
is. And indicate the *exact* error.

And since you're doing a clean install, make sure you have all the
drivers handy!
