Install aborts

Installing Vista 32bit as an upgrade to a nearly new XP install on a machine
that passes the compatibility test with only minor issues. I am getting the
installation updates, but not requesting activation when online.

The procedure gets to 2 Upgrading Windows - Gathering files (75%) ... and
then reboots. As the DVD is still in the drive it re-starts the
installation, but then tells me it cannot upgrade but only do a new install
because setup wasn't run from within Windows. So I cancel.

I don't want a fresh install - I want to upgrade the existing XP install.

Should it be re-booting at this point, and if not how do I stop it? Or, how
do I make it continue the install after the reboot?

I worked it out. The system has two 250Gb SATA drives which I would have
though was enough free space, but Vista was trying to install on the 8Gb
PATA disk which was only there because I thought I might experiment with
assigning the swap file to a separate drive. It wasn't a boot drive; in
fact it didn't even have a drive letter in Windows (although it was
formatted) but somehow the installation found it and decided it was the
primary drive for installation, and of course there wasn't enough space.
