Inbox Items Change to "Read" by Simply Scrolling over Them

How can I stop Outlook Inbox items that I have not opened (read) from
changing to the Read status? E-mails change to read status without my
reading them, either when I use the arrow to scroll down, or when I read
another e-mail, delete it, and return to the Inbox--if I'm returned to an
un-read item and click another e-mail to read, the e-mail I was returned to
automatically un-bolds, indicating I've read it.

Prior to the last update, mail items would remain un-read unless I actually
opened them.

Does anyone know how I can change this?

try right clicking on the gray border of the preview pane and choosing
preview pane options. tools, options, other also have a link to the same
options. if this menu is not present in your version in either of these
locations, we need to know the version.
