In support of Free Download Manager

Free Download Manager is a simple, harmless free downloader that works
great with Firefox and IE. It has been a part of my system for a very
long time, and has never caused any problems whatsoever for my computer
or any of my other programs. I have very good malware detection (A2,
Spybot S&D) and firewall protection (ZoneAlarm), and have never been
warned in any way about something FDM is doing.

However, I would imagine if you took most any program and subjected it
to the type of scrutiny that FDM has apparently been under by a couple
of ACF readers since the program was nominated, one could find something
that one could use against it. Sadly, the glee/resentment expressed in
some of the attempts to prevent this program from being added suggests
personal agendas that have nothing to do with the nomination process. I
would be willing to bet that in at least a case or two just a little
history sleuthing would prove this.

But in any case, I decided to pursue involving FDM in this process
because it was suggested, but also because I think it would be an
excellent, helpful addition to anyone's computer who is interested in
downloading programs from the internet. It turns out that quite a few
folks agree. It's not because I "couldn't be bothered" to vote the first
time (I did, btw), it's because I did somehow overlook it. This was
mentioned in my initial post.

Because nothing is perfect, I'm not at all against rational discussion
of this issue, and welcome its continuation if needed. Since I started
all of this, I felt I should explain how I felt and again express my
belief in and support if FDM. From what I have read, and based on other
recent nomination-based discussions and inclusions, I have seen nothing
that should preclude FDM from being part of the final vote. I will not
be offended if the group decides otherwise. I feel sure most would agree
that the vast majority of things in life are far more important than this.

What criticism of FDM? I haven't seen any. I think it would be hard to
criticize the latest release. It works great. In fact, I think it's the best
free download manager/accelerator out there.

Now I'm hearing rumors that FDM harbors NavExcel spyware. I did recently get
infected with NavExcel, but didn't notice where it came from. Comments?

I installed FDM yesterday and did a virus and malware search today, using
Adaware, and Spybot S&R.

I found a couple of malware, like Alexa, but no NavExcel.
I tried Antivir too, still no problems.

I'll check it out, but I can't until tomorrow. NavExcel infestation
looks relatively easy to remove, but I won't risk it without having a
fresh drive image handy, and I don't have time to make the image (and
possibly restore it) today.

During install, you get a second EULA, and at the VERY top it says -

"NavHelper and Search Toolbar software installation
NavHelper installation is NOT required."

meaning if you don't want NavHelper, click NO.

How did I miss that? :\

Thanks!
