Free Download Manager is a free download manager, believe it or not!
Since the passing of Net Transport to the dark side (shareware) I have
been looking for a comparable freeware downloader, and now I think I
might have found it. I don't believe it's been mentioned here before.

I'm trying it out now, but so far it looks like the best and most
versatile downloader I've seen (now that I've played around with the
various options). Rated 6 ducks at NoNags.

I've used Flashget version 0.87 for years. One of the features I like is
that it creates a plain text log file, recording the deatils of each
download (including any comments I want to add).

Does FDM do something like that?

Using Opera 6.05. But I just tried it again and it worked ok. So it
must have just been a temporary glitch somewhere.

Yes, something like that. The lower half of the download window has two
tabs. One shows a progress graph like Flashget 1.5 (I don't know if your
version has this), but better IMHO in that it would appear it
automatically adjusts the size of progress boxes so that the complete
graph fits into the resizable window. The other tab is the log, and I
just had a look at a download I did last night and it's kept all the
details of times when it was connecting, downloading, paused, etc from
when the download first started to when it was completed.

Comments can be entered and viewed through the "Download Properties"
dialog box for that download, and can also be viewed in the main window.
I haven't seen an option to create a separate log file, but there are
probably a few things it does that I haven't discovered yet.

There are screenshots and forums (including one for suggestions) at the
website. Anyone who likes the FlashGet/Net Transport type downloader
will probably also like this.

Thanks -- it's working very well. Definitely a more up-to-date replacement
for Flashget.

Maybe not *quite* after all -- FDM doesn't create a separate log file that
holds the download details plus any comments (e.g. program description,
"tried this -- not very good", etc). The "Comments" section in the Download
Properties menu only holds a dozen words or so.

If any one knows of a download manager like Flashget or FDM that *does*
create a log file, please tell me!
