a previous (closed) thread discussed FDM and whether it added any
spyware:

1. webroot spy sweeper is cool with it.

2. it apparently contacts a bunch of 3rd party sites (without asking
permission of course):

view.atdmt.com
m3.search.vip.scd.yahoo.com
pa.ads.yahoo2.akadns.net
speatdmt.m7z.net
att.atdmt.com.att-idns.net
www.yahoo.akadns.net
bc.us.yahoo2.akadns.net
a566.x.a.yimg.com

i blocked these in my hosts file and FDM still works ok, so i wondered
if anyone had found any other problems with it.

Are you sure the HOSTS file is operative when you use FDM?
I thought it only got loaded when using a web browser.

Short answer, yes. The HOSTS file is used whenever an application uses
Windows' own API for DNS resolution. Most apps do as implementing DNS
isn't as easy as an API call.

That looks like 'maybe/probably FDM uses the HOSTS file'.
