importing .pst

When I click "File - Import - Messages - Microsoft Outlook" I get the
following error message: "Messages can not be imported from the MAPI client".

I would also like to import my contacts.pst but am not sure what format to
use.

My old hard drive died. Outlook.pst; Contacts.pst; and Archive2008.pst were
recovered and put on a CD. I transferred Outlook.pst and Contacts.pst to my
new Vista C: drive.

I could not transfer Archive2008. It said "Can not read from source file or
disk", then it goes away. I guess the earlier archives couldn't be retrieved.

I am getting very frustrated. MS says to contact the computer mfg, ACER
says it can't help me, call MS. MS will charge me for help. I just bought
this stupid computer with Vista and nobody will help me after they have their
money.

Outlook & Mail (or Outlook Express when applicable) need to be functioning
on the same PC before you can Import or Export one to the other
So you need to install Outlook on the Vista PC and in the OL Profile connect
your old data files first.

I have same issue since Mar'08. New laptop purchased with VISTA (not by
choice). Old Compaq Presario had Office 2000. How can I install Outlook on
new laptop without an installation disc. Website doesn't support Office 2000
beyond security updates. They want $100 for Outlook 2007! You think that's
fair?

Oh my gosh!!!! Everybody had Outlook before, but if you are unfortunate
enough to have lost your previous computer, you have to pay for a program
you'll only use long enough to transfer files because most people didn't buy
it separetly, it came with their computers. That can't be right. No husky,
that is not fair. It means I've lost all of my old e-mails and contact
information.

If you have a new PC, that didnt have the trial version of Office included
you can download & install the trial version of Office, activate it, & set
up OL with your old data files. OL2007 can utilise all previous OL data
files, you can then transfer your OL data to Mail

Thank-you

My new computer came with a trial version of office, but for some reason it
did not include Outlook. I just downloaded a trial version from the website
that does.

Guess I'm out another $100 for Outlook after paying $700 for a laptop with
VISTA, an os I did not want but had no choice, and $160 for Office Home
version 07 plus $ 80 upgrade for MS Money Plus '08. In addition I must use a
SPAM filter from Qurb $29 because I still get junk mail galore and Norton 360
to protect from virus & use tools to manage my VISTA os from Microsoft!!!
OMG
In the least, the error message when you try to import .pst file should
explain you need Outlook to do this instead of 'MAPI CLIENT ....'

I suspect they wrote the error message that way because there are MAPI
clients other than the one in Outlook. They don't seem to be common,
though.

If you have a .pst file, don't you already have Outlook? If so, install it
and import.
Or download the Office trial, and use it to import the .pst and uninstall it
afterwards.
