Importing Outlook pst files from an XP machine into Mail on a Vist

I am having trouble importing outlook .pst files from my old XP machine into
MS Mail on my new Vista machine. I've tried suggestions made on this forum,
but selecting File/Import/Messages/Outlook Files generates the error message
"Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client". The .pst file in question
is on a USB because I was also finding that the "EasY Transfer" utility is
somewhat optimistically named. I can usually work through most issues, but
this seemingly straightforward task has me stumped. Grateful for any
suggestions.

Outlook has to be instaled & configured with the pst, on the Vista PC before
you can Import

Cannot be done. OL must be installed & using the PST you want to import.
