to a cd-rom, will I have everything I need to reinstall XP after a
disaster?

My computer is a HP Pavilion and came with a recovery partition that
the boys at the local geek shop say is corrupt (unuseable).

Well usually the HP recovery partition is hidden from users and files accessible only when using the boot disk provided for the purpose of restoring everything back on... Is it partition C or the hidden one that is now corrupted? Yes Windows CD does have all the utilities one needs to repair or reinstall but again if the HD is corrupted and not accessible one might need to format it before a new install of Windows...

Hi, how old is your HP Pavilion? I also have a HP Pavilion 531w, which
came with the recovery partition and no CD's. My PC will be 2 years old in
July. Are you aware that HP will send you the complete setup for you PC and
all you pay is shipping & handling. It cost me $12.55 and I had the package
within 7 days. I hope this helps before you have to spend too much on
getting it back together. I was at my wits end, from the responses through
the emails that HP wasn't going to help anymore since my PC was out of
warranty. So I bought a retail version of Windows XP. There is a toll free
number and the guy was really a sweetheart. Well worth the call.
