IE7: When surfing, the google.com web page is always displayed

Hello,

I recently had IE7 forced upon me via the auto updates :<), and I'm no
longer able to use it. When I try to view any web page, the google.com web
page is always displayed. With some sites, it also displays a google error
message. For example when I type in
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx

Google's "Not found" error is displayed, with the message:
"/en-us/downloads/default.aspx was not found on this server"

It is as if the original URL is being tampered with by google. When I
upgraded to v7, the google toolbar had been previously installed. I removed
it when these problems began, to no effect.

When IE7 is started, the google.com page is <<mostly>> displayed. Sometimes,
it displays the message "Detecting proxy settings" on the status bar for a
number of seconds, and then the correct home page is displayed. I have only
enabled the "Automatically detect settings" checkbox under LAN Settings, so
I don't understand why is it searching for proxy settings.

With all this, I can't use Windows Updates, because it thinks that I have no
Internet connection. Meanwhile, through all this, Firefix works perfectly.

Can anyone help?

Is it possible to deinstall the IE7 updates? I couldn't find IE7 listed on
the list of installed programs.

Many thanks,
Paul
