IE7 question about default email

first of all, isn't it odd that ie7 is not shown on the msnews.microsoft.com
news server.
are they trying to pretend it never happened, like Vista ?

anyway, in Firefox they have in Tools->Options->Applications->Mail to, in
which I can specify my at&t webmail.
In IE7, att&t/yahoo tech support is saying that I must use their toolbar or
their version of IE to have that option available.
I don't want extra toolbar crap and I want to be able to set up other
machines quickly for this.
Is there any simple/direct way to config this? Right now, the webmail
option is not listed in the picklist for Tools->Inet
Options->Programs->Email

To add the Read Mail button which opens the default email program on the
Command Bar:-
Right-click the toolbar> Customize Command Bar> Read Mail> Add.

The Mail button no longer appears on the toolbar, and there are changes in
the way that you access mail-related functionalities in Internet Explorer 7:

The Read Mail icon is not relevant to my original question, but has the same
configuration problem. Read Mail is also limited to client software. How do
I configure IE7 so that when the Read Mail button is clicked, my webmail
page is brought up ?

As I said before, in IE7 Tools->Internet Options->Programs->Email lists
only email client software and does not show my webmail as an option.

At the similar screen in Firefox, my webmail does appear and the function is
as it's supposed to be, i.e. when a "Reply to" link on a webpage (like
Craigslist ads) is clicked, the browser goes to the webmail page with the
destination email address already inserted.

On my own machine, using Firefox solves the problem.

On many other machines that I service, would loading Firefox as the default
browser be the only realistic solution?
Most (well, actually all) of these people don't want to mess with client
software, and would rather stick with webmail.

It isn't odd at all. The newsgroup
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general is the place to post messages
about all released versions (Not Beta versions) of IE.
Consequently, there is no need for a separate place of IE7.

But Jim, IE7 is not a beta... IE8 is.

Of course IE7 is not a beta version. That is why you post problem messages
for IE7 to microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general.
And, IE8 is still a beta release (RC versions count as beta releases). That
is why you should not post problem messages for IE8 to that newsgroup.
There is a beta newsgroup for IE8 (which I don't know because I do not run
IE8 beta).

Oh, I'm sorry. Don't know how, but I somehow had the impression you
were saying IE7 was a beta... must have had a major brain fart, either
that or it's old age setting it... ;-)

Hi - In 2002 I bought a Compac Presario 5000. It had preinstalled
software with Windows XP. It also had the CD that I could restore
Windows to the factory state if needed. That computer crapped out in
2008. I had a computer built.

Jim, in the future, please don't start a new thread! I already asked you
pertinent questions; you should have responded there!

That being said...

When you had this computer built, did you purchase an OS? It sounds like
you didn't, but I want to make sure.
I had the HD from the Compac copied
to the new 160 GB HD in the new computer.

I doubt that would work. The hardware surely is significantly different.
Additionally, the license is non-transferrable, so it's not a legit
installation.
There is still a C: and D:
drive from the way Compac had it divided. The D: is just a small
partition and has what I believe to be files that would be used if I
had to use the Compac factory disk to restore. At this point I am not
sure the Compac restore disk would still work on the new computer.

I'm sure it wouldn't.
== Everything works OK, but there are alot of junk files on the HD
and I am considering buying a copy of the full install Windows XP,
format the HD and reinstall Windows. My D: drive is FAT 32 and the C:
is NTFS. If I format, will that erase the FAT 32? I can then use my
new Windows XP and reinstall, restore my files from backups and be
set to go. Does that sound like a solid plan?
I'm actually very surprised that everything works fine.
Your plan to perform a clean install does sound solid. Here's one place you
may purchase XP:

Here are some sites with complete installation instructions:

I would definitely delete both partitions; the FAT32 one is useless.

I appreciate all of your help with this. One more question has me fixed up.
If my whole hard drive is C:,
is that considered one partition or no partition?

Thanks everyone,
