Virus IE7

Hi,
the computer had several virus's even though McAfee security center
was on guard.
I have scanned with Malwarebytes and Avast and the virus problem seems
to have gone away but IE7 is broken.
It works but all the settings have gone from tools--internet options--
advanced. Also because of it being broken the MS updates site, and
online scanners don't work.
I have tried installing IE7 over the top and even tried IE8 but they
won't install.
Is there any idea's on how to fix, I couldn't get Firefox to work on
the windows update site either.
Thanks Dave

You may have had some malware but I sincerely doubt you had "viruses".

You should not download anything from PCButts1. He isn't a real anything,
let alone an MVP. He is a plagiarist of other people's software, hosts pr0n
on his website, and slanders good people when they try to defend
themselves. His software will also prevent you from getting to legitimate
malware-fighting websites.

Follow the instructions David Lipman gave you.

You have much more work to do! (PS: Windows is infected, not IE.)

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!

2. WinXP ONLY!! => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

Thanks for the links,
I'll run as many of these tools as I can but IE will not allow any
online scans.
The active x applications won't run and when I click the yellow bar to
allow, it links through to help info instead of allowing the install.
I am fairly confident that its now just a broken IE7 as all the other
scans have come back clean and I have reset the hosts file.
I really just need an IE7 fix it tool if there is such a thing.
I have tried in safe mode as well. The Microsoft update site won't
work on FF otherwise I'd download the latest updates to try and fix.

Try accessing & running the Safety Center scan
(http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm) after rebooting into
Safe Mode with Networking, if necessary.

Do you have both McAfee Security Center and Avast installed & loading at
boot?

Can you manually update your anti-virus application successfully?

When did you download MBAM? Can it auto-update when you start it?

If you cannot access Windows Update website (using IE) and/or if you cannot
enable Automatic Updates and its dependent services (e.g., BITS) and/or if
your anti-virus application and/or MBAM cannot update, Windows (not IE) is
still infected. If so, reinstalling IE7 (if you could do so) is not going
to help.

Hi,
I can access all the update sites for Avast, Malwarebytes plus I ran a
windows update repair tool that turned on windows updates again.
IE7 is the only thing that is busted that I can see. The malicous
software tool came up clean by the way.
I used the McAfee removal tool to remove it so Avast is the only thing
running.
I'm sure a virus or malware broke IE while trying to stop possible
updates and fixes, it even deleted the restore files.
Its just a damned pain in the bum that I can't reinstall IE7 over the
top.
I have tried all of these things in safe mode as well.
It looking like a format and reinstall now or possibly a repair
install. Its a pity IE is so integrated in the OS and also that other
browsers don't work on the Microsoft online scanner or update sites.

Assuming WinXP SP3 is installed, which was installed first, SP3 or IE7?

Have you or have you not downloaded and run the Apr-09 version of the
Malicious Software Removal Tool (full scan, not quick scan)?

Have you or have you not attempted to run
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm in Safe Mode with
Networking?

Was McAfee Security Center installed when the machine first got infected or
did you install it after-the-fact?

Did you install Avast before or after the computer got infected?

Hi,

Thanks for the help so far, I still have had no luck fixing IE but the
computer is running well except for this IE issue.

Assuming WinXP SP3 is installed, which was installed first, SP3 or IE7?

As far as I know IE7 was first but I downloaded SP3 again and
installed it over the top to try and fix IE7.
Have you or have you not downloaded and run the Apr-09 version of the
Malicious Software Removal Tool (full scan, not quick scan)?
Yes

Have you or have you not attempted to runhttp://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htmin Safe Mode with
Networking?

Yes, the browser asks to let the add on run but left or right click
allows information about the bar, the options are not available.
Was McAfee Security Center installed when the machine first got infected or
did you install it after-the-fact?

Already installed
Did you install Avast before or after the computer got infected?

Yes via memory stick.

The browser works after applying the run once fix but all the options
in the advanced tab under tools is missing

Well, you could (1) uninstall SP3 and then (2) uninstall IE7 to see if the
behavior persists in IE6 (I suspect it will) but I think you're going to end
up having to format & reinstall Windows to fix this.

NB: A Repair Install will NOT fix it and a Repair Install should not be
attempted unless IE7 is uninstalled (which would require first uninstalling
SP3). If perchance you've already done a Repair Install without first
uninstalling IE7, a format & clean install is once again you're only
recourse.

Hello,

once again thanks for the advice, I haven't done a repair reinstall so
probably won't. I have tried many fixes but had no luck.
All the usual things don't work, as one last attempt I'll try
uninstalling SP3 and see if IE6 turns up.

Uninstalling SP3 will not return the machine to IE6 but it will allow you to
uninstall IE7.
