IE7 Crashing Problem

G

Guest

I have been in search of a cross-browser modal window script for one of my
web-pages. I found two well known scripts which claim compatibilitly with
IE7, and the script authors have not received any complaints about IE7
crashes when people visit their site. These sites work perfectly in Firefox.
When I visit them in IE7, they both crash.

These two sites crash:
http://jquery.com/demo/thickbox/
http://livepipe.net/projects/control_modal/

The IE7 viewport turns white before any content is loaded, and the session
must be terminated in Task Manager.

I have tried Uninstalling and Reinstalling IE7. I tested these sites on IE6
before reinstalling IE7 and they worked fine. After reinstalling IE7, these
sites still continue to crash. I have no toolbars installed, and I have
tried visiting the sites in IE7 (No Add-ons) mode, and these sites still
crash.

Why would these sites crash on my IE7 system, buy not on other IE7 systems?
And why would they work as expected in Firefox, but fail in IE7? Do you have
any ideas about how I could fix this problem?

PA Bear,

Thanks for your reply. I apologize if I posted in the wrong forum. I
didn't realize there is an IE specific newsgroup. It seems there are too
many catagories to be correct these days. I don't know if I should continue
posting here or not, but here are the answers to your questions:
1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?
Yes, the crashing persists in No Add-ons mode.
2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
Yes, the crashing persists after RIES.
3. If you uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) and don't
reinstall it, does this behavior persist?
No, the crashing does not persist in IE6 after IE7 is uninstalled.

I did not know about RIES until now, but it did not help the problem. I'll
try posting in IE newsgroup as well. Hopefully it will not be considered
cross-posting.

Please let me know if you have any new ideas,
Thanks again!

It sounds like you had a "horked" (dirty, bad) install. Try reinstalling
IE7 per the following::

Hey, thanks again. I uninstalled and reinstalled IE7using Sandi's
installation tips today, and I used the IE7 software from the website, not
from auto-update. The crashes are still continuing. However, at least now I
can feel comfortable that my install is good. I didn't see any programs
installed on my system listed in the IE7 Release Notes. I am stumped with
this conflict, there is a conflict somewhere, right?

Again, if you have another idea, I would be happy to give it a try.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Both pages are in need of updating (various Script errors) but they don't

If you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode now, do the two pages still crash IE7?

Sorry for taking a while to write back. I tried these sites in No Addons
Mode again and they are still crashing. Although, the thickbox site is oddly
offline at the moment. I see they have updated it's version, so when their
site comes back online, I will see if version 3 crashes. In the mean time, I
have been trying to find any malware on my computer. I have followed the
instructions in the CastleCops Wiki: http://wiki.castlecops.com/MRP ... and
AVG Anti-Spyware found a file called "Backdoor.Bifrose.kt" hidden in an .exe
of a program I use to make file and directory lists. AVG successfully
deleted that file, and I made sure the ListMaker software has been removed.
I do not think these crashes are caused by malware, but I am just trying to
be sure.
So far I have:
- Checked for strange programs in Add/Remove
- Ran CCleaner
- Ran Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Windows Defender, SUPERAntiSpyware rebooting after
each scan
- Ran Antivir Antivirus scan, and Windows Live PC safety full scan with
defragmentation and everything
- Ran AVG Anti-Spyware (in safe mode) which found and successfully deleted
"Backdoor.Bifrose.kt"

You can read my correspondence with CastleCops here:

I have stated my problem to them, and I am now waiting for a response.

Hey PA Bear, thanks for mediating between here and castlecops. Their
automatic notification of replies did not work for some reason! For some
reason I wasn't notified. I will check back more often this time. If you
had not messaged me here, I probably would not have ever known that they
responded. Their forum is also really busy.

I posted my new log, made with the version of Hijackthis v1.99.1 .... I
hope that the scan will be helpful!

Thanks again for your time, and I am awaiting any instructions or new ideas
you may have. This one is a real bugger! :-(

PA Bear,

Thanks for your reply. I apologize if I posted in the wrong forum. I
didn't realize there is an IE specific newsgroup. It seems there are
too
many catagories to be correct these days. I don't know if I should
continue
posting here or not, but here are the answers to your questions:

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?
Yes, the crashing persists in No Add-ons mode.
2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
Yes, the crashing persists after RIES.
3. If you uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) and
don't
reinstall it, does this behavior persist?
No, the crashing does not persist in IE6 after IE7 is uninstalled.

I did not know about RIES until now, but it did not help the problem.
I'll
try posting in IE newsgroup as well. Hopefully it will not be
considered
cross-posting.

Please let me know if you have any new ideas,
Thanks again!

IE7, and the script authors have not received any complaints about
IE7
crashes when people visit their site. These sites work perfectly in
Firefox. When I visit them in IE7, they both crash.

These two sites crash:

http://livepipe.net/projects/control_modal/

The IE7 viewport turns white before any content is loaded, and the
session
must be terminated in Task Manager.

I have tried Uninstalling and Reinstalling IE7. I tested these

IE7,
these
sites still continue to crash. I have no toolbars installed, and I

Why would these sites crash on my IE7 system, buy not on other IE7

And why would they work as expected in Firefox, but fail in IE7? Do
you
have any ideas about how I could fix this problem?

Hey PA Bear, thanks for mediating between here and castlecops. Their
automatic notification of replies did not work for some reason! For some
reason I wasn't notified.

YW. Such notifications often end up in Spam folders so make sure messages
from (e-mail address removed) addresses aren't being filtered out of your inbox.

Good luck. I know you're in good hands.

Thanks again for your time, and I am awaiting any instructions or new
ideas
you may have. This one is a real bugger! :-(

Please check-in at your Castle Cops thread:

I recommend you remove HijackThis v2.x beta and post a new log using
HijackThis v1.99.1 which you can download from this link:
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip

NB: Extract hijackthis.exe v1.99.1 to the same folder (C:\Program
Files\HijackThis) where v2.x was located.

Sorry for taking a while to write back. I tried these sites in No
Addons
Mode again and they are still crashing. Although, the thickbox site is
oddly offline at the moment. I see they have updated it's version, so
when
their site comes back online, I will see if version 3 crashes. In the
mean
time, I have been trying to find any malware on my computer. I have
followed the instructions in the CastleCops Wiki:
http://wiki.castlecops.com/MRP ... and AVG Anti-Spyware found a file
called
"Backdoor.Bifrose.kt" hidden in an .exe of a program I use to make file
and
directory lists. AVG successfully deleted that file, and I made sure
the
ListMaker software has been removed. I do not think these crashes are
caused by malware, but I am just trying to be sure.
So far I have:
- Checked for strange programs in Add/Remove
- Ran CCleaner
- Ran Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Windows Defender, SUPERAntiSpyware rebooting
after
each scan
- Ran Antivir Antivirus scan, and Windows Live PC safety full scan with
defragmentation and everything
- Ran AVG Anti-Spyware (in safe mode) which found and successfully
deleted
"Backdoor.Bifrose.kt"

You can read my correspondence with CastleCops here:
http://www.castlecops.com/t188510-Backdoor_Bifrose_kt.html
I have stated my problem to them, and I am now waiting for a response.

Thanks again, this problem is quite confusing.

Any other advice?

Jeremy

:

[Please continue the crosspost to IE General newsgroup.]

These two sites crash:
http://jquery.com/demo/thickbox/
http://livepipe.net/projects/control_modal/

Both pages are in need of updating (various Script errors) but they
don't
crash IE7 here.

If you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode now, do the two pages still crash
IE7?

Hey, thanks again. I uninstalled and reinstalled IE7using Sandi's

from auto-update. The crashes are still continuing. However, at
least
now
I can feel comfortable that my install is good. I didn't see any
programs

this conflict, there is a conflict somewhere, right?

Again, if you have another idea, I would be happy to give it a try.

It sounds like you had a "horked" (dirty, bad) install. Try
reinstalling
