Need Help Re-installing WinXP

Scott

Hi,

My reinstall of Win XP has run into a problem I have not been able to solve. Any help is appreciated.

Problem: IE7 crashes while opening. The window appears for about a 1/2 second.

Starting point: My recovery CD is Win XP Home, SP2, IE6, WMP 9.
This works. IE6 opens and can surf the net.
I used the SP3 file (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU) which was successful, IE6 worked.

I then went to Windows Update to get the remaining updates There were about 40. They
included an update to IE6 and IE7 and WMP 11.

From the SP3/IE6 point I tried several different paths to the destination point.

(1) Downloading them all went successful, but IE7 crashed when opening. I did install Firefox and downloaded file for IE7.

(2) I did another reinstall and after SP3 used the downloaded IE7 file. IE7 still crashes. (Stayed with WMP 9)

(3) I uninstalled IE7 and IE6 worked. I then went to Windows Update and updated XP in steps; updates, security, then IE7.
IE7 still crashes when opening. (Stayed with WMP 9)

Thanks for any suggestions.

If you willing to regress:

1) Try installing IE7 before installing SP3.

2) After SP3 install one major (i.e., IE, MP, etc) update at a time,
between reboots.

3) Definitely do not insatll every available update at the same time;
install 5 or 6, reboot, install 5 or 6 more, reboot.... It's tedious,
but sometimes more successful, I've found.

Scott, please post in plain text. Thank you.

For best results, don't use Windows Update. Instead, download the
standalone installer from this page:

The problem with that is if OP ever needs to revert to IE6 in the
future, he would first need to uninstall SP3! I wouldn't recommend that.
Also, I'm pretty sure that what you suggest would interfere with a
Repair Install (not 100% sure, I need to look it up).

That is WRONG advice! It is clearly best to install SP3 first and then
IE7 if one is aware of the issues involved.

And I install ALL the updates ALL the time. I have upgraded hard drives
on over three dozen laptops in the last two months and after installing
Windows w/SP3 and all MS apps, allowed MSU to fully patch the system. I
haven't had one issue. Maybe it's because I exclude IE7 from the
updates, and leave that option up to the user.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

I solved the problem by making the "Great Leap Forward", upgrading from IE6
directly to IE8.
IE8 opens and seems to be working without problems. The problem that led me
to reinstall has also been fixed. That problem was that videos from MSN
Music and TMZ would hang during download and not play, either in IE or
Firefox. Those sites work now

I did try upgrading from IE6 to IE7 before applying SP3, but that did not
work.

Thanks
