What I mean is the window on the desktop closes, but if I
go to the Task Manager there can be several (15 is the
most) IExplorer processes running eating up my resorces.
WHY?? ANY CLUES????
I've check for spy ware ect. with spybot, adware, cwshredder
& hijackhthis. ran my antivirus all with the latest
updates. I do this twice a week, and have been for a long
time, but still have the problem. Any more help would help.

Bill,
Check legitimate programs running in the background. Prevent programs like
anti-virus, security, ad-blockers, etc from loading at startup. Disable any
toolbars or other IE add-ons. Re-enable them one at a time- see if one of
them is causing the problem.

Bill,
For you, does Iexplore ALWAYS fail to close or just
sometimes?
I'm having a similar problem, but it only ever seems to
occur (sometimes) when I have used a plugin like Java or
Acrobat viewer through IE.
Also, are your "dead" processes actually
called "Iexplore" or "Iexplorer"?

Had the exact same problem this weekend. Any instance of IE would
not close. Had to kill it using Task Manager.
Ran virus check, spybot and ad-aware - nothing found.
Tried "fixing" ie - no help. Tried reverting to previous setup
(ie5)0 no help. Would up doing an inplace upgrade of Win2Kpro to
get it working again. Then re-installed ie6sp1 and all updates
and working fine. Hope you find an easier way.
