Win98 Multiple Instance of IE6 in Close Programs Box

D

I am running Windows98SE with IE6.

If I close the IE6 browser after having used it, I get an instance of
"iexplore" in the Close Programs box that pops up when I hit
Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I will get an instance in that box for every browser session I have
run prior to hitting Ctrl+Alt+Delete. For instance, If I have opened
and closed the browser three times, and then hit C+A+D, three
instances of "iexplore" will appear in the Close Program box.

All of these individual instances of "iexplore" are "hung", i.e.,
stalled out. When I hit the "End Task" button, the "Program is Not
Responding" box appears (after some time delay) and I can force the
program to quit. The instance in the Close Programs box then
disappears. This step must be repeated for every instance of
"iexplore" in the Close Programs dialogue box......every instance is
stalled.

I am also having some problems with System slowness and lock ups in
other areas, such as deleting files. Sometimes my entire system will
lock up and require a hot reboot while deleting large files.

I have run Lava-Soft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, YaHoo's
Spyware Sweeper (which I believe is a licensed version of WebRoot
Spyware Sweeper) and a complete virus scan with AVG Anti-Virus Free
Edition .....all with the latest definitions upgrades. These give
absolutely clean reports, so I don't believe I have a virus or spyware
infection.

In addition, I did a complete "Repair Internet Explorer" through the
"Add/Remove" programs dialogue box in "Control Panel". I have the
following updates installed:

Internet Explorer6
Q903235
Q905915

Outlook Express6
Q837009

Windows98
KB891711
KB896358
Q823559
Q840315
Q888113
Q890175

I understand that IE update Q905915 has been causing some problems in
WinXP, but I have not seen any posts regarding Windows 98 problems
like the one I am having. Anybody have any further suggestions as to
how I should proceed to fix this problem?
Thank you.

Hi Dave,

No support for Win98. We all stopped using it eons ago. But your problem is
probably somethig else you have installed on your puter... MSN Search Bar
with tabbed browsing. I have had the occasional same and the Task Manager
solution is fine enough.
