C++ RunTime Error IE6

B

Bradley Brunswick

User is accessing a java application via IExplorer 6 on XP SP1 using Sun JRE
1.4.2_04. No problems when only accessing this application. However, when
user opens another IExplorer window at the same time to access an Oracle 11i
application which uses a JInitiator 1.3.1.18 browser add-on, the user will
get:

“Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:\ProgramFiles\
InternetExplorer\iexplore.exe Abnormal program termination”.

Once user clicks OK on error, both IExplorer windows crash, i.e., they
disappear. Client needs to have both applications open simultaneously. The
Oracle 11i application does not have a specific JRE requirement. A native JRE
1.3.1.18 version was installed but we have removed, rebooted and installed 1.
4.2_04 JRE. The Oracle 11i application does use a Jinitiator 1.3.1.18 which
is a self-contained separate plug-in. Using either application using
IExplorer one at a time is no problem but as soon as they are both open at
same time in 2 different browser windows, that is when runtime error occurs.

Have tried the following with no success:
- Found no instances of the browser add-in called "CommonName"
- Unchecked the "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
check box
- Checked "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" box
- Checked "Disable script debugging (Other)" box
- Unchecked "Display a notification about every script error" box
- Client's IT team would not run HiJackThis for scan but stated their own
malware/virus tools did not detect any
- The runtime error does not show up in the Event Viewer

Looking for any ideas and/or suggestions on any shareware utils that may
provide more diagnostic info.

Thanks!!

Did you try upgrading SUN Java Virtual Machine to last release?

And did you try upgrading Windows Xp to SP2 (also for security reasons!)?

Hi Vincenzo. I am a newbie to this forum so I apologize in advance but not
sure what you mean by "Please include all of previous posts in your replies,
Bradley."

I click the "reply to previous post" link. I see your response in the "Your
Message window" along with my response to PA Bear. Should I be copy/pasting
the entire thread in each response?

The java application is only certified up to Sun JRE 1.4.2_08. Initially,
user did have Sun JRE 1.5.0 but we uninstalled that version so now they are
on Sun java 1.4.2_04 which is working fine when only the java application is
accessed. The runtime error occurs once another IExplorer window is opened to
access the Oracle 11i app. The same issue occurred when the java application
used the SUN JRE 1.5.0 before we uninstalled.

I recently received message that user was upgraded to XP SP2 and same issue
still. The java and Oracle 11i apps work fine when only one or the other is
open but once they are opened simultaneously in 2 different iExplorer browser
session, we get runtime error.

Thanks for your patience.

Brad - did you get anywhere with this? I've seen the same problem -
only workaround I've found is to use IE with the MS JVM - as soon as
it's Sun JRE (1.4 or 1.5) with Jinitiator I see the failure. Jinitiator
is v1.3.1.18.

Hi Matt - Thanks much for the info!! That is exactly the configuration
problem user has. Unfortunately, the java application requires Sun JRE (1.4.
2_04 / _08) so we can't use MS JVM. Prior version of the app did use MS JVM
but we changed when MS stopped bundling with new OS a while ago. Our applets
will not display with MS JVM.

I'm running right now with the tips from Vincenzo (Thank you!) which target
IE DLL's. This is slow process however, as user's IT support is limited. May
also try an alternate browser if they allow.

Thanks again and please let me know if my posting etiquette is on/off the
mark as I’ve read through suggested guides from Vincenzo. This is a great
forum and want to make sure I have proper posting behavior:)

The following is from a 1999 Oracle document -
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/pdf/256629.pdf

Q: Will Oracle JInitiator coexist and operate correctly when used at
the
same time as the JavaSoft Plug-in, in the same browser instance?

A: Due to the way that dynamically loadable libraries are loaded and
the
way that the JVM dynamically loadable libraries are named, the Oracle
JRE and the JavaSoft JRE can not be run simultaneously from within the
same browser instance. This means that a browser user can not switch
from using the JavaSoft Java Plug-in to Oracle JInitiator in the same
browser instance. The browser must be stopped and restarted when
switching between the different applications that use Oracle JInitiator
and Java Plug-in from JavaSoft.

I'm assuming this information is still valid, in which case it
surprises me that Oracle haven't had a commercial reason to make the
two environments co-exist. I think this is the end of the line unless
you can hack something together. You could configure Oracle applets to
run inside the Sun JRE, but I don't know how stable/easy this is. I
know that Oracle produced the Jinitiator because of Sun/Javasoft JRE
instability - something that's improved massively over the years. See
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/pdf/forms_jdk141.pdf
(again slightly out of date).

I saw the same article but was baffled why 1 out of the 4 users was not
having the problem

I just had some good news today from customer and their IT has apparently
resolved the java conflict. They should be sending me the documented process
so I'll post as soon as I have it. Thanks!!

We just migrated to Oracle 11i, and that Oracle TID is correct. The
Jinitiator is Oracle's own java implementation. Since 11i is Broswer based,
and Oracle is written in Java and PL, the Jinit customizes the end users
enviorment. I suppose Sun's JVM wan't good enough. In any event, you cannot
have the 2 instances of Java running through the same browser session without
getting the runtime error. I passed this info on to my Corp IT staff. The
have a support contract with Sun. I will try to get the resolution to this
issue posted when I receive it.

I think we will be seeing more of thses errors as more and more apps are
being ported over to Java.

Hi Guys,

This is my first post to the forum and i am expecting some body to help me. I have been facing the similar issue when IE sessions crash on opening an appliaction using JRE and then opening Oracle 11i. IE6, JRE version is 6 build 7, JInitiator 1.3.1.25. Is there any solution exists for this problem?

Thanks,
