IE6 Lost Information Bar & ActiveX

N

Noel S Pamfree

I have lost the information bar that pops up under the Links bar of Internet
Explorer.

This means that when I try (for example) to download Flash 8 from the
Macromedia site nothing happens because I need to have the bar open in order
to tell the machine to install ActiveX.

How can I get the bar back?

Cheers,

Noel

Hi Noel :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Courtesy of Ramesh -

First go to the top IE menu bar and click View,
then check that the Status Bar is check marked.

Then check the information here and see if it helps:

How to Use the Internet Explorer Information Bar
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_infobar.mspx:

The information bar is related to downloads, pop ups and Active X. Is it
checked in every instance? Check to see which setting(s) you checked?

also...

Open Registry Editor and ensure the UseSecBand is set to 1 in the =
following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\New Windows

also..

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the tips.

The Status Bar is checked but when I go to the registry key you give I
cannot find anything resembling 'UseSecBand' so I can't check its is set to
1. I am not an expert on the registry so it might just be because I am not
sure where to look.

If I can't solve it with this would re-installing I.E. solve the problem?

Did that happen after installing KB896688 (MS05-052), the latest
Cumulative Update for IE? If yes, try the following:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

See also the new released KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909889
which is referred to *now* in the revised Security Bulletin 05-052.

You solved it - I am so grateful.

Now I think back everything was working fine until I downloaded the KB896688
update!

My Symantec virus checker had stopped working but all is now fine!

Vielen Dank,

Noel
