IE6 Lockup Frustration

Steve Tuma

After I built a new dual XEON computer and loaded XP Pro on it Internet
Explorer stops working after using it for a while. I am unable to end the
IE task even with task manager. It does allow me to minimize the browser
and open another IE window. However when this happens many times other
programs in my PC will freeze too. I try to do a shutdown restart of
windows but nothing happens. I have to do a hard reset. IE seems to work
for a while after rebooting but then all of the sudden it stops working.

I have reinstalled XP 3 times and I get this problem every time. Because I
spent over 50 hours trying to fix this problem I then downloaded firefox and
am using it without any problems whatsoever and it seems faster in loading
pages. But I would really like my Internet Explorer to work. This problem
happens on a brand new fresh loaded system. I am using Trend Antivirus and
Microsoft anti spyware beta. And I am also a VB software developer.

Can anyone help me? If so send an email to : (e-mail address removed)

Thanks

Steve

Have you downloaded and installed all the critical updates from the Windows
Update website?

I can't tell you how to fix it but I can tell you how to power down. Open
your task manager and on the shut down tab, click turn off. At the same time
hold down your control button to override anything else and it should power
down without a hard restart. I have a similar problem except my IE will just
close out completely, and I tried from July 5th to find an answer with no
such luck, I did everything on earth. I finally reformatted. Everything was
fine until a batch of updates was installed a few days later. LOL and the
problem came right back. I also use Trend Micro Anti-Virus, MS Anti-Spyware
Beta. I also use Ad-aware SE Plus. MS crash says I have spyware. I don't. A
fresh install and no toolbars except IE6. Personally I think my problem is
with Sun Java but good luck to you. It's weird though both of us reformatted
and use those two products and have IE problems.

Elaborate on "a while". Have you checked Task Manager's statistics
for any clues when it gets in this state? For example, there are known leaks
such as ones for GDI Objects which your symptom might be explained by.

I am unable to end the
IE task even with task manager. It does allow me to minimize the browser
and open another IE window.

Where? In the same PID or in a new one?

However when this happens many times other
programs in my PC will freeze too.

Again, I think you need to refine your symptom description.
Get some objective details behind your "freeze" characteristic.
E.g. I think that a loop could cause a symptom like that
but have completely different statistical features.

I try to do a shutdown restart of
windows but nothing happens. I have to do a hard reset.

Are you waiting long enough for a Wait or Cancel prompt?
If you haven't tried killing other tasks (including explorer.exe)
e.g., using Task Manager you're missing even more opportunity
to refine your symptom description.

IE seems to work
for a while after rebooting but then all of the sudden it stops working.

There's that "a while" again... <eg>

Good luck
