Windows XP lockup

I believe IE 6.0 is causing a lockup problem with my XP OS. I do have SP2
installed. PC is new as of July 2004 w/566 M RAM and 1.2 GHz cpu. There seems
to be an associated problem with sound also. If I scroll on a web page,
streaming audio is slowed down. When the PC locks up, no error message can be
sent. The only thing I've noticed is that IE uses a lot of cpu time when
viewed via Task Manager. I have all the spyware, adware, virus protectio,
etc, so it is not a virus. This may happen several times a day.

Are there any problems indicated in Device Manager? Right click My
Computer icon on Desktop and select Properties, Hardware, Device
Manager.

How are you managing virtual memory ( pagefile )? Any "memory boosters"?

I have checked the device manager but have found nothing. I have learned a
lot about the software within XP by trying to solve this. I suspect the basic
IE routine is used for many things, and this may be part of the problem. Any
widow that you open is probably based on IE.

You did not answer my questions about virtual memory?

Are there
Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Has there been another version of Windows on your computer before
Windows XP?

Sorry, I missed that. I have nothing extra to manage memory other than XP. I
do have about 6.5 GB free space available on the hard drive.

I reviewed the event viewer but see nothing under any catagory at the time
of the problems. There are a couple of warnings and errors but they were not
at the time of hangup. I will keep a watch on it and post any new errors,
especially under apps and systyem. Security had nothing. (Trend Micro
running).

I appeaciate your insight.

A little added info: The hard drive came from my previous PC which died last
July and originally had 98SE as the OS. I upgraded about 2 1/2 years ago to
XP. Ran fine after XP was installed. I do not have a sound slowdown if I use
a different brand browser. Virtual memory is 400 M. This problem is a
complete stop of everthing, only a hard reset will work.

What was the application hang? Was there a report in event viewer?

What programmes are you running before the system locks?

There are a lot of entries but nothing anyway near the time of the last two
lockups. Generally, I will have streaming audio on and usually a mahjong
game. I have about 4 or 5 different mahjongg games from a DOS version up to a
Windows version. Sometimes it is a solitaire game or a shooter. Never really
know.

Here is some info: Catalog Database (756) Database
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb is
partially attached. Attachment stage: 3. Error: -1032.
When this occurred, I was unaware as the PC kept running, no lockup. Hope
this is the kind of info you meant.
